Help need to decipher baptism name!
« on: Monday 21 March 16 18:28 GMT (UK) »
Can anyone help decipher this child's name?  It looks like M.A.of Neil Kelly and Eliza McCambridge - towards the top left hand side of the page of this parish register.  (2nd Sept 1848).  Surely they didn't just baptise the baby with initials?!

Thanks for all suggestions!

Some of the other names seem to have been abbreviated eg "Pat." "Cath.", maybe its Mary Ann abbreviated?

edit: there's another "M. A." on the next page down

Further down the page on the 7th of November there are another set of initials M.A. perhaps a commonly used abbreviation for Mary Ann or Margaret Ann.

You could both well be right - they had already had a child, Margaret, born 2 years previously.  I think it could be Mary Ann - I always felt sure there was a sibling Mary, but never found her birth.  Thanks!  :)

Hello -

I would read the mother's name as Elizabeth Ambridge.

craggagh.

I agree, it does look like it could be, but I think its must be "Mc" as the M for "M. A." is a very close shape match for what comes after Eliza

It's definitely McCambridge - I have other parish records which are far easier to read.
