How do I retrieve all photo's etc from my Ancestry tree ??
« on: Tuesday 29 March 16 02:41 BST (UK) »
Not sure if I am on the right page here, mods please feel free to move.

Am thinking of quitting Ancestry, getting too expensive for an OAP such as myself plus I don't like the new format.  Question is can I retrieve all photo's etc before doing this ??

As always...regards patvp

You don't need to!  Your tree stays, you still have access, can edit, and you will still have limited search options.

I don't like the new format either, am in still in the process of fixing what they messed up.

I have also decided to copy all my records, photos and stories etc. back to my PC into a folder for paternal and maternal.

Then I'm going to export my gedcom to my own computer, add the extras back in, and probably put it out on Family Search or one of the other free ones!

Goodness knows how long that's going to take - still a bit of editing from the changes to do.

My advise would be to keep all your research, photos etc. on your own computer whether you are using Ancestry or not.

All websites are likely to be removed at the whim of the owner, some without notice.
Many of Ancestry's servers failed for about three weeks not so long ago, it was simply luck they were not the servers hosting the trees.

Don't rely on others keep your research safe on your own computer.

I would echo Guy's comments, and add - have at least one back-up of your files.

Transcriptions and NBI are merely finding aids.  They are NOT a substitute for original record entries.

I have 10 trees on Ancestry - and I no longer pay a subscription  ;D

I am able to look at, edit, and update all my trees.
All I can't do is add data that Ancestry holds (like census records) - these I have to add manually.

Incidentally, Ancestry didn't "mess up" any data on any of my trees? :-\

KG - I'm pretty sure they were right before the change, but of course I can see that maybe some of the errors or omissions were my own, but certainly not all of them!  Oh well - I'm getting there, (but still liked the old one better, especially the overview page)!  ;D

I use Family Tree Maker - the offline software created by Ancestry and recently sold off - to backup everything I have on my online Ancestry.

Where you say you have to manually download the census images etc; not with Family Tree Maker as it downloads the sources and pictures, everything you have attached if it has an image. The GEDCOM file you receive from Ancestry will not have this media and you have to do it manually as you say.

But you have to have an active paid subscription for this to work.  If your subscription has expired, you can't download the images.

You are right, Ancestry doesn't allow you to view/download anything without a paid account. I went with the fact the thread opener said they were thinking of quitting so hope they still have a paid account! If they do, it would be very simple to do.
