military uniform
« on: Wednesday 30 March 16 23:08 BST (UK) »
Can anyone help with identification of the uniform my ancestor is wearing - I thought it was military but then thought maybe it might be connected to the police force.  My ancestor George Mather was born in Northumberland in 1854 and lived there until he came to Australia in 1906.
Any help is greatly appreciated.

I agree with Scouseboy regarding the infantry, they look like Infantry collar dogs and same goes for the badge on the helmet plate.

Well spotted, is that a "T" above it also?

There's also what looks like the number "5" in the middle of the motif halfway down the crossbelt?

5 V Durham with four stripes. So probably a Quarter Master Sergeant in the 5th Volunteer Battalion of the Durham Light Infantry. He has a least one star on his right cuff for five years service. He could very easily be an ex Regular.

The Vs became Ts in 1908. But with a Queen Victoria crown it has to be a V.

SB..the police did have swords at one time. Google 'police hanger'.
