Chappel in Lewes
« on: Wednesday 30 March 16 23:20 BST (UK) »
Looking for a baptism for Robert Chappel who was born about 1775 - a note on his marriage record says 'from Lewes, Sussex'. No hits on ancestry, familysearch or freereg under any obvious variant of his name. Any help appreciated, even if it's only to rule out Lewes completely as a birthplace :)

Did he die before the 1841 census?

There are variations in spelling of the surname on the 1841but the majority of entries for that surname appear to be from Devon

Yes, he died some years before it. I found one Chappel in Lewes on ancestry baptising a child in 1839 - hopeful, but not very useful! - and a few others in Sussex, so they were around.

The trouble is that often notes of parish at marriage often mean just that they were living there at the time - not that they were born there.
There are a few baptism in Lewes for Chappell and variants but later dates than you are looking for.
