Marriage 1900 (Cuckfield district) possibly Poynings
« on: Sunday 03 April 16 00:00 BST (UK) »
Searching for details of a marriage between James BRISTOWE and Ada Louise SMITH 1900, they were living at Poynings on the 1901 census. I am attempting to find out who Ada Louise was, born abt 1882 at Rogate, was she Ada Louise Day, mother Sarah Jane?
thanks,
Sharon

Thanks Trish for your help, It certainly is a confusing family.
I think that whilst William DAY was away at sea his wife had a couple of kids on the side.
One to William SMITH and one to Edward AYLING, I can't get over the fact that she is living with William DAY "AND" Edward AYLING on the census - baha!
Since I am tracing Ada Louise I only need to locate a William SMITH :(

thanks heaps,
Sharon

A bit more info on what Trish found
The marriage at Pyecombe
James Bristowe was a Labourer, as was his father Edward
Ada Louise Smith, no occ given, father William Smith, Cowman
residence for both Pyecombe
she marked, witnesses were Reuben Flint, Mary Eliza Flint (x)

Baptism of Ada Louisa at Rogate
born May 2
abode Rogate
(nothing in occupation column)
In the margin, I think it is "pr" (private baptism)
That was also the case for Edward in 1886
No birth date for him, his names were Edward Ayling Alfred (don't know why Alfred missed off the transcript), abode was Rogate

But your Ada Louisa married James Bristowe in 1900, and they are in Poynings in 1901?

Could this be the Ada who married James Bristowe?
Baptism at Rogate
14 January 1883
Ada Louisa
parents William + Mary Ann Smith
abode Rogate
father a Labourer

says "born", but no date written in!
John

1891 census of Rogate has William Smith, 35, born Fernhurst, and wife Mary A., 33, born Rogate. And William is a cowman, as on the 1900 marriage record.
Six children. But where is daughter Ada? Not listed. Don't think she has died, nothing really in the indexes. Should be around somewhere?
