Marriage of Wilfred BLACKBURN and Emma
« on: Sunday 17 April 16 18:38 BST (UK) »
I haven't been able to find a marriage between my 4x great grandparents - Wilfred Blackburn and Emma.
Wilfred was born in Dalton (in Rotherham) about 1823, and Emma was born in Bramley/Ravenfield (about 2 miles from Dalton) about 1822. They are together on the 1851, 1861, 1871, and 1881 censuses (they both died in the late 1880's) in Dalton - with their children Lucy Ann Blackburn (born 1848 in Conisbrough), Mary E Blackburn (born 1851 in Bramley), John Blackburn (born 1852 in Dalton) and Wilfred Ernest Blackburn (born 1860 in Dalton).

I know that the easy option in this instance would be to order a birth certificate for one of the children to find out the mother's maiden name, but I wondered whether someone on here would have more luck than me finding a marriage between Wilfred Blackburn and Emma before I have to resort to paying for the certificate.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Unfortunately the BMD index for Lucy doesn't give a mother's maiden surname.

Is she not the Lucy A Blackburn shown on YorkshireBMD as registered in the Tickhill subdistrict of Doncaster in 1848, mother's maiden name Badger?

I've found a Lucy Ann Blackburn registered in Doncaster in the Jul-Aug-Sep quarter of 1848, but for some reason the maiden surname isn't showing, so if this is the same record that you have found then I'll have to take your word for it that the surname is Badger!

It sounds as though you are looking at the GRO index, which does not display mothers' maiden names at this date.  As Pauline and I have mentioned, you can see the maiden name for yourself on the local index at YorkshireBMD: www.yorkshirebmd.org.uk.

Thank you for this - I'd found the Wilfred Blackburn 1841 census previously, but this one is new to me (and I've just done a search for it and found it). The marriage is still a mystery to me too!
