Military Records - 5th Lancers
« on: Wednesday 20 April 16 00:02 BST (UK) »
Hi,

I'm trying to find military records for Henry Stewart - army number 2723 - who was a staff sergeant farrier with the 5th lancers in the late 1800s.

I'm really looking for any records that show his birthplace, enlistment date, military travel with family etc.

I'm happy to order these records from somewhere but I don't know where to get them from.

I've searched online for him, and have had some help on here previously too.

I know that Henry died in 1900 in South Africa during the Boer War.
I know he was definitely in India with the regiment from 1894 to at least 1897 as he was married there and had children there.
But I don't know when he went to India or when he left.

I know he has a clasp and is mentioned on a plaque in Dublin?

But I really have no idea of his nationality or even a definite birthdate.

I have no idea of his parentage - except that his father was possibly named Walter Stewart.

Any help with how to track down his records would be much appreciated.

Thank you

Thanks for your reply.

Do you know where I could find his records that show his enlistment and travel?
Would they be with the national archives?

If he died in February 1900 he must have died at Ladysmith as the siege was not lifted until the end of that month. During the siege lots of men died from drinking polluted water. The Boers allowed the defenders to set up a hospital at Intombi about three miles east of Ladysmith. It was a one way trip as they were not allowed back if they were cured. There is a cemetry at Intombi so I suggest you post a question on the South Africa section or on the British Medal Forum which has lots of SA members. Someone will have a list of names buried there.

The clasp will be the Defence of Ladysmith clasp on his Queen's South Africa medal.

Thank you Ken.

On one of the Boer War websites it says he died of disease and another says he died of scurvy.

Would his widow have received anything after his death? And would there be any way of finding that record?

Hi Emma

Here is an article I found - http://samilitaryhistory.org/vol056sw.html - The cemetery closed after the siege and is run down it seems. Reading the article if he died when he did he must have been buried in Intombi.

From his number he would have enlisted in 1884/1885. Luckily there should be a muster book in the National Archives covering that period that may give you age and place of birth. It appears he was also awarded the Elandslaagte clasp.

Regarding the movements of the 5th Lancers, I have this:
1884 the regiment were based in Brighton
1885 half the regiment went to fight in the Sudan
1886 In Shorncliffe
1888 to 1897: in India (at Meerut, then Muttra)
1897 in Canterbury
February 1898 - sailed to Natal

Apart from the Sudan the deployments were part of normal rotation of stations and the approved wives and families would have been with the regiment. I am studying what happened to the families during the Boer War and up to now it looks as if they were sent from Natal back to England before the siege started in November 1899. Soldiers and their families used troopships and passenger lists were not taken.

Have you found his family in the 1901 census? Regarding widows pensions they were introduced in 1902 and back dated to the start of the Boer War. It lasted six years or until she remarried. But about 85% of records were destroyed to save space.

What was the wife’s name? And do you know when she was born? As they married in India there is a good chance she was the widow or daughter of another soldier

Thanks for all that info Ken. Very useful.
Hopefully I'll be able to find the muster records...

His widow was Mary Pauline Stewart - also known as Mary Jane Stewart - born in Dublin
And yes, she was the widow of another 5th lancer - a sergeant Henry Leonard Graham who died in 1893 in India.

I don't suppose you have any records of Mary's first husband Henry Graham?
I'm also wondering when he enlisted. But I have no army number for him.

Thank you!
