« on: Saturday 23 April 16 03:35 BST (UK) »
My grandfather Nathaniel Ronni arrived in New York in Dec of 1913, he got married in 1922 to Edla Nurmi. He was born in 1888/89. His destination was Biwabik Mn. but I have not been able to locate any information on his between 1913 an 1930 when he shows up on the U.S. census married to my grandmother an living in Carver Massachusetts an Wareham Massachusetts. My father was born in Worcester Massachusetts. Any information between those years would be great. Thank you Laurenlee02

Hi laurenlee02

I took a look in the Finnish Church books and have Nathaniel in Alavieska in Oulu. He was born 25 Aug 1889. His parents were Juha (Johan) Eriksson Rönn and Lisa Johansdotter. Nathaniel had a sister Johanna born 25 May 1891.

The passenger list for Nathaniel states that his father was Johan Ronni.

I took for granted that Juha's surname was Eriksson but in fact was Erikasson. Erika was his mother's name and as he was an illegitimate child he was given his mother's name following the patronymic system.

These records are mixed with Swedish and Finnish. The Rönn family lived in the Swedish speaking part of Finland on the west coast. His name was sometimes Juha or Johan.

Looking deeper into the Rönn name it is apparently a Swedish name from the beginning. Rönn in English is the tree for mountain-ash.

he got married in 1922 to Edla Nurmi.

According to a tree on Ancestry he married an Edla Josefina Nupuli. The tree has her family in Finland but not Nathaniel's.

Here is Nathaniel's 1940 US Census: https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:K4NL-MW1

Perhaps similar pronunciation to rowan which is another name for the mountain ash tree?
