KINGSTON, CANADA WEST?
« on: Sunday 08 May 16 00:17 BST (UK) »
Researching my Phillips family in some 'facts' there have been mention of Kingston, West Canada  and West Canada.  Now I know Kingston is on Lake Ontario which to me is Eastern Canada.  This family came from UK so was Kingston, Ont. west for them coming from UK?
Announcement in South Australian paper  "late of Kingston, Canada West"  I'm just waiting to hear from a researcher who was visiting Kingston library this last week to see what he could find, but it puzzled me about this 'Canada west' anyone else seen this?
Cheers

Back then Quebec was Canada East and Ontario was Canada West:

"After the Constitutional Act of 1791, the territory was divided between Lower Canada (present day Quebec) and Upper Canada (present day Ontario), with each being granted an elected legislative assembly.[22] In 1840, these become Canada East and Canada West after the British Parliament unified Upper and Lower Canada into the Province of Canada"

Many thanks for explaining, I now have that location in my mind. Reading someof the other posts I'm now wondering if this child Mary Elizabeth Phillips was an adopted child and notice something about  'Home children' Is there anything to look t which could explain this for me - a church organisation who cared for children and then adopted them to overseas parents?????

Will be working on the Kingston side of things again.
Regards and thanks again, much appreciated.

If the time frame fits for your "Home Child" - this will possibly be of help to you.
