DNA explained. Can it be in simple lay terms
« on: Sunday 08 May 16 18:28 BST (UK) »
Hi all, a question for those that know. Am thinking of having this testing done as in genealogy it intrigues me.  But TBH I don't understand it.

Can any give a low down in simplistic terms. Or is it too complex.

What will I hope to find?

Big ask?

If you want a test to look for possible genealogical matches have a look at FTDNA's Family Finder test. Any matches will tell you the approximate relationship eg 2nd to 4th cousin.

The minus to this test is that your maternal and paternal "cousins" will be mixed up so you will not know which side of the family they are from, so it may be more difficult to find out where you connect with them.

YDna is for males only so that's out for you, unless you have a brother. This test is to trace the male line and the surname.

MTdna will follow your maternal line, so mother, her mother, her mother and so on. If it is anything like the YDna test, any matches may be so far back in the mists of time before records began, that you would have no chance of finding a connection.

This is my take on the tests available through my very limited experience, and even less knowledge and understanding. I found the Family finder test results interesting though I have not found a cousin match with anyone yet.

Ancestry have videos answering many questions about DNA.  If you have an account with them you can access the information when you're logged on.  Just select "Ancestry Academy" from the "Extras" drop down menu.

lostcousins.com has produced a few newsletters which may help you to decide which test to go for with which company.

Will take a look at lost cousins... Think I need to gain more understanding before I undertake, which at some point will.  No point in getting personal info if I don't understand it. I don't have Ancestry, just FindMyPast.

Sure once there is a basic knowledge it will make more sense to understand.

Thanks for input

A lot of articles here Cas, and some for 'beginners' at the bottom of the page:

And the three tests you can take:
