Largs, Helen Hill

I am researching a Miss Helen L Hill who lived at Elmbank House in Largs, and who donated a painting to Glasgow Galleries in 1946. I have no other information and hope someone may know something of her or the history of Elmbank House.

Not sure about Helen L. Hill you might have to ask the gallery she donated it to if they have any background on her.  What was the painting?

I've seen a few references to Andrew Potter Lusk of Elmbank Largs.
He seems to have died in 1934 , Scotlandspeople have him as Andrew Poter Lusk death 1934 Largs , Ayr(shire) , born c1859.

Thanks Don,
I only have 'Elmbank' so don't know if House, Villa or Cottage. The painting is 'Loch Katrine' by Alexander Nasmyth ( an important artist), maybe suggesting she lived in one of the larger houses but Glasgow Museums don't have any other information.

Andrew Potter Lusk left a will. His executors included a nephew called Matthew Hamilton Hill and a niece called Elna Stillie Hill.

This looks to be the 1901 census entry for the siblings, William and sister Helen Hill, mentioned:

James H Hill 39 grain miller
Margaret E Hill 37 b. Girvan
Helen S Hill 9
Matthew H Hill 3
Rebecca Mckinlay 22
Annie M Boyd 23

Address: 25 Forsyth St Greenock

Margaret Hill his wife, maiden name looks to be LUSK. Likely sister to Andrew Potter Lusk given the reference to nephew and niece mentioned earlier by William from APL's will.

A great source of info is likely to be the Watt Library in Greenock and their online 'Intimations' database. From that for example is the marriage of James Hill and Margaret Earl Lusk:

Marriage: HILL James 1889 James Hamilton Hill, grain miller, to Margaret Earl, 2nd daughter of John Lusk, at Rosevale, Greenock on 12th September 1889 (Greenock Telegraph).
