Nicholas connection
« on: Tuesday 10 May 16 13:59 BST (UK) »
Hi

I am unfamiliar with Cornwall as an area and was wondering if anyone can find a connection between these two men:

Henry Nicholas born c 1846 in Sennen, Cornwall
&
James Nicholas born c1869 in Liskeard, Cornwall.
I realise that these two places are at least 68 miles apart!

Henry Nicholas was the lighthouse keeper at Souter Point Lighthouse, South Shields in 1871, and keeper at Nash Point, Wales in 1881, and keeper in St Agnes, Scilly Isles in 1891.
He was married by 1881 and he and his wife Lucy, appear to have had a daughter, Louisa, born around 1880 in Cornwall.
I cannot trace him, nor his family with any certainty after 1891.

James Nicholas married Sarah J Urwin in South Shields during the September quarter of 1891.
The 1891 census (taken just prior to his marriage) finds him living in Westoe, South Shields where he was boarding with the Grossman family, his occupation was a coal miner.
I believe that James Nicholas (Nicholls) parents were Henry Nicholas and Elizabeth Lyne who had married in Liskeard in 1868, but were living in the north of England by 1872.

James named his first two children, Elizabeth Jane and Henry - probably after his parents.
Henry Nicholson was born around 1846 in West Looe, Cornwall.

Can anybody find a link between Henry Nicholson, the lighthouse keeper, and father and son, Henry and James Nicholson?

Thanks
Sue

More info needed

Does the 1871 census show whether Henry was married or widowed or still single?

Have you looked for James on the 1871 census?

Quote
He was married by 1881

What year did he marry?

I believe that James Nicholas (Nicholls) parents were Henry Nicholas and Elizabeth Lyne who had married in Liskeard in 1868, but were living in the north of England by 1872.

Freebmd has a birth for James in 1868 - a copy of his birth cert will confirm his parentage

Is there a death for Elizabeth pre-Henry's marriage to Lucy?

The 1891 census (taken just prior to his marriage)

Does the marriage cert show his father as Henry - lighthouse keeper?

Thanks Milliepede

Sue - you need to research James backwards to see who his father was then research Henry back to see if he had a brother of that name.

There is nothing at the moment to suggest any connection apart from their surname/birthplace.  I suspect James was Henry's nephew.

You need the 1868 birth cert

James is not on the 1871 - suspect he was the illegitimate son of one of Henry's sisters

Without the 1868 birth cert you have no starting point to make a connection

Hi

Thanks to everyone for their hard work! As I said, I think James may (and I'm not 100% certain) have been the son of a Henry Nicholas born in or around West Looe in Cornwall around 1846 (not the lighthouse keeper Henry!).
Henry and his wife, Elizabeth, relocated to the north of England following the birth of their elder children, James, and John Lyne Nicholas.
I've linked him more conclusively to James as by 1901, Henry was living in South Shields at 175 George Potts Street, South Shields, whilst James was residing in 115 George Potts Street.

I can't find a link between the two Henry's though. I have been told by a family related to James, that there is a link, but I'm starting to think that they are mistaken!

Thanks

Sue
