Mabel Hart (nee Burch) (1892-1957)
« on: Wednesday 11 May 16 05:32 BST (UK) »
Hello,

I have discovered that Mabel Burch (b 1892 Newton Abbot), was the daughter of Frederick E. Burch, Licensed Victualler. In 1901 Census the family were at 6 Madrepore Rd, Torquay. In 1911 Census living at The Royal Standard Hotel, 3 Lumaton Rd, Torquay.

In 1919, Mabel Burch married Clement D Hart, and they sailed for New Zealand, 3 November on "RMS Ruahine".

Is anyone able to tell me anything about the Royal Standard Hotel, Torquay or are there any photographs? What other hotels was Frederick E Burch the publican?

Any information about this family and the hotels would be much appreciated. Thank you.

Good Afternoon,
I'm afraid I've not got a lot to give you but i did find him working as a gardner next to the Imperial Hotel Tormoham in 1891.
1901 sees him start in the beer business as a beer house keeper at Madrepore road ,this was a limited licence establishment which couldn't sell spirits but paid less of a fee to sell beer usually brewed on the premises.
1914 Kellys  onwards he's at the Royal standard in 68 Hele Road .
If you search google images for Royal standard Hele it comes up -3 llines down for sale with paramout  across the photo.

Sorry there's not a better one I can see at the moment

Hello ciderdrinker,

Thank you for replying, and certainly confirming that Frederick E Burch was living next to the Imperial Hotel in 1891. I did wonder about being a Gardener, then a Beer Keeper, then a Licensed Victualler. I have been searching for early photos of The Royal Standard, and found a piece in the "Western Morning News" 2011 about its closure! The building had opened in 1935 so replaced the one that Frederick E Burch had. Not being very familiar with Devon, perhaps you might be able to point me in the right direction. Regards.
