Baptism look up for Nellie Earl(e)
« on: Wednesday 11 May 16 21:39 BST (UK) »
Nellie Earl(e) was the daughter of an unmarried Elizabeth Earl(e), born in March of 1890. Would Elizabeth have had Nellie baptized? (I don't think she kept her baby) but just wondering. The child Nellie was born at High Street in Uckfield which is also the address given as the residence of her mother, Elizabeth Earl. On the 1891 census, Nellie Earl, age one,  is either living with or visiting as "niece" with John and Mary Alcorn at Isfield. And then on the 1901 census, Nellie is "nurse child" living with Alfred Barham and his daughter Naomi Barham at Mayfield, Sussex. She is 11 years old.

Her baptism is not listed on IGI (familysearch). But might be registered nevertheless. I'll check baptism database for Sussex....Having problems wth login to Sussex Family History Group website this eve  :-\

Thank you MargP and Jules for your responses. I am not aware of my grandmother, Nellie Earl(e) having any siblings. I am looking for information on her mother, Elizabeth Earl, born 1860 at Brighton, Sussex. This is my grandmother's mother, a single 30 year old domestic. Elizabeth gave birth to my grandmother, Nellie, in March of 1890 at High Street, Uckfield. In 1891, Elizabeth is living at Brighton as a domestic and my grandmother Nellie is living with  her great aunt and uncle, John and Mary Alcorn at Isfield as a one year old. The Alcorns are Elizabeth Earl's aunt and uncle. Then there is nothing until 1901 where my grandmother is found as a "nurse child" living at Mayfield, Sussex with Alfred Barham and his daughter, Naomi. Then in 1907, at just 17 years of age, Nellie is on a ship to Canada to work as a domestic in Saskatoon. So what I really want to learn is more about Elizabeth Earl and IF she totally abandoned her child, if she ever got married, if she ever had other children and when and where did she die? That is why I wondered if Elizabeth had baptized Nellie.

It is hard to say, if Nellie was abandoned, has the census records, were only one day in there lives, over a 10 year period,

Is this her?
Sussex Agricultural Express, 10th October 1890 (and reprinted 11th)
Uckfield Petty Sessions.—
Yesterday.
Affiliation Order
Elizabeth Earl, of Isfield, summoned David Sycamore, of Lewes, to support her bastard child.— Mr. Bedford, of Newhaven, defended, and the case was dismissed.

That man named summoned by Elizabeth Earl - possibly might have been David Sickelmore (rather than Sycamore). Interesting for me, as I might be related to him!
With his sister Lydia in Lewes in 1891
Can't see anybody called David Sycamore around.

Would be interesting to know why the case was dismissed. Did he deny being the father?

Blimey, jonw65! That HAS to be her!!! Oh, thank you, thank you, thank you! Wow, amazing that you found that!! Do you think that the paper misspelled the name? Sickelmore sounds more like the name of a Brighton inhabitant than Sycamore!!! I am going to look up this guy!!! Wow, I'm so excited right now!!!!
