SHARPE family of Sandhurst
« on: Thursday 19 May 16 09:08 BST (UK) »
Just looking into my SHARPE family link who seem to come from the area around the Kentish Sussex border.
Thomas SHARPE married a Philadelphia SIMONS  1758 Sandhurst
Children
Philadelphia b 1760 Goudhurst
Thomas b 1759 Goudhurst
John b 1765 Sandhurst
Richard b 1766 Sandhurst
Priscilla b 1768 Sandhurst
Samuel b 1770 Sandhurst
Bishop b 1773 Sandhurst
This family group later moved to Marden Philadelphia's home town around 1777
Philadelphia married James Gardiner 1784 Marden
Thomas married Mary Frost 1793 Marden
Richard married Ann Hardes Marden 1786
Priscilla married John Hopgood 1784 Maidstone
Samuel married Ann Wooden 1795 Marden
Bishop married Susanna Wooden 1795 Woolwich
John ?
I believe the name BISHOP is an earlier link with the SHARPE family probably with the BISHOP families also from this Kent/ Sussex area. More than likely a Thomas BISHOP as this name is carried forth in later generations of the GARDINER family as of the connection with Philadelphia SHARPE
So wondering if anyone connects with these SHARPE branches

There is a marriage bond dated 18 October 1784 that states John Sharpe of Marden 19 son of Thomas Sharpe and Philadelphia born at Sandhurst 5 February 1765 and Mary Fuller of Benenden, spinster, at Benenden, Thomas Chittenden of Marden signed the bond.
Listed under Kent Surrey London: Canterbury Marriage Licenses 1781-1809, Vol 32.

The marriage took place at Benenden the same day.

Thanks amondg
Great work. I'll look out for a copy of the Canterbury Marriage Licenses and someday track down a copy of the Benenden Parish registers.

It's on ancestry, the local library usually has a subscription so you can view for free.
Cannot attach entries from ancestry.com

Thomas Sharpe was buried 3 June 1777 at Marden

Thanks Amondg,
I can get access to Ancestry so I'll check it out, although I think alot of their Kent records are transcriptions and I always try for copies of original parish registers.
You're correct with the Bishop connection, recently I got a copy of the Will of a Thomas Bishop who appears to be the father of Priscilla Bishop who married John Sharpe.
I believe John and Priscilla were Thomas Sharpe parents, which probably means I'm related through the Bishop line to Bishops of Newenden that I've seen on another post on the Kent Forum.
Many thanks again.
