Hughes Family of Toll End, Tipton - missing Baptisms etc.
« on: Friday 27 May 16 05:22 BST (UK) »
This query has been in my 'too hard basket' for years. . Now I really need to find an answer to complete my New Zealand part of the Hughes Family Tree book.

The Baptisms of the  first four children of John Hughes and Hannah (Webb), I have found in Tipton records. They are William 31 Jan. 1813, Eliz. 14 Jan. 1816,(died 25 June 1818). John 21 Feb. 1819 and Elizabeth 8 April 1822. Pretty sure all were at St. Martins, Tipton, I need to check my notes on the original details.

But the next thre childrene are nowhere to be found. Their ages have had to be estimated from their Death age in New Zealand. Jane,(married William Burrows,Leicester) born C 1827, James (married Elizabeth Whitehouse in Aylesbury)  born C 1823, and Joseph unmarried born 1825. They all arrived in N Z in 1850's.

Have not been able to find their mother's death, Hannah Hughes (Webb) either. Father, a canal boatman, John Hughes died in 1855 in Aylesbury next door to a Whitehouse family (relative of his daughter-in-law) of T.B. So I expect him to be their father.

Does anyone know if some of the records of the Tipton, Toll End Parish are missing - due to bombings during WW2, fires or other disasters.? Then I can explain why there are missing dates.

Perhaps I have been looking on the wrong sites. I use Ancestry.com, Findmypast, and Familysearch as well as various other sites.

Grateful for any suggestions.
Faith, nee Hughes.

Hi
I know it's the weekend and you may not want to think about this but are you sure the youngest three are theirs?

All the baptisms you have are at St Martins and the couple do come from Toll End but John is a miner and there's this burial.

John Hughes age 35 Toll End 31.7.1822.

Wouldn't that also fit for father John?

Could it be perhaps that only the older children are yours?

ps I've tried Freereg and the dates for Tipton baptisms do seem to be there. However there are numerous little non-conformist chapels in the area and they could have gone to one of those.

There's a burial for a Hannah Hughes age 63 New Road 6.5.1857 which would match with

Hannah Webb d of Thomas and Eleanor Tipton 5.10.1794

Thank you ciderdrinker for your ideas. Actually, I had thought before that perhaps there were two families involved but was going on family data passed on to me quite a few years ago.

The children were all grouped together then as one family - but I have always been aware that Hughes was such a common name in that area, not to mention the names John and Hannah (often Ann!!) as well. I had seen both the Deaths of a John and Hannah so I'll now send for their Death Certs. to see if there is a clue somewhere.

The son John Hughes who married Harriet Backhouse in 1846 in Dudley, has a John Hughes , Boatman as the father on his marriage Cert. and his Death in 1888 aged 69 yrs works out with the 3rd child's age. They shifted to Middlesbrough after the 1861 Census.

Unfortunately, as time has passed by out here, the oral history has gone also gone.

I'm very grateful for your help and ideas so thank you very much. You may have pointed me in the right direction.

Faith.
