Could somebody please search Register of Corrected Entries??
« on: Thursday 21 July 05 02:52 BST (UK) »
I am not really sure of what this means and cannot seem to find anything online to search, but would be grateful if somebody could do a search of Register of Corrected Entries for the following:

1.  Death James Beattie 1 August 1919 District of Denny County Stirling.  Register of Corrected Entries Vol I Page 59, 24 November 1919.

2.  Death John Menzies 11 November 1902 Parish of New Monkland County Lanark.  Register of Corrected Entries Vol IV Page 199, 4 December 1902.

Regards

Menzies (Scotland)
Beattie (Scotland and Ireland)

If the death was sudden or unexpected, especially with no doctor previously in attendance, the facts of the death would have been reported to the Procurator Fiscal for him to decide if there was any need for a formal investigation, such as a Fatal Accident Inquiry, into the death.  You should be able to make a judgement on this possibility from the place and cause of death shown.

In most cases, an RCE on a death register entry relates to such a reference to the PF, and most such RCE entries contain no more than the confirmation by the PF's doctor of the place and cause of death.

That written, there may be additional information in an RCE entry, especially if the name(s) of the parent(s) initially supplied were wrong, or some information was missed out by the informant.  Once the registrar had signed the entry, the only way of making corrections, or adding info was for there to be an entry in the RCE.

RCE images, linked to the birth, marriage and death register images will come on-line at www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk some time in the next year or two, once a major problem has been sorted out, relating to such a linkage when the interval between the original entry and the RCE is many years, - I've seen 60 years!, - when, quite often, the registration district number has changed in the interim, - quite possibly several times if it's a city center area and the interval is long.

It's not just a matter of wholesale changes, either.  Over the 150 years of the Scottish statutory (i.e. civil) registration system there have been many, many minor changes in registration district boundaries..........
