Help finding info on Grt Grt Grandparents
« on: Thursday 21 July 05 10:51 BST (UK) »
Hi everyone

This is the first post i have made on rootschat, so apologies if i haven't posted it in the right place!

Here is where i need help...
My Grt Grandma Annie Taylor b. April 1872 in Reading. Her Father was Samuel Taylor, Mother Charlotte (formerly Grimley).

I can't find Samuel or Charlotte's Birth, marriage or death details??

Here is the info i have, I have the family on the 1871 Census, living in St Lawrence, Berkshire...

Samuel Taylor b.1831 Ikstone Derbyshire Head
Charlotte Taylor b. 1840 Sheepshed, Leics Wife
Edward Taylor b. 1863 Ikstone Derbyshire Son
Frederick Taylor b. 1867 Reading Berkshire Son
Ellen Taylor b.1869 Reading Berkshire Daughter

By the 1881 census Charlotte was living with a new man (samuel was still alive), called William Cripps (who annie always thought was her father untill she saw her birth cert).

1881 Census Heston in Middlesex....

William Cripps b.1873 Moreton Berks Head
Charlotte Cripps b.1840 Sheepshed Leics Wife
Ann Cripps b. 1872 Reading Daughter

can anyone point me in the right direction as i would really love to find more info on Samuel Taylor and Charlotte??

Hope that makes sense! any help would be much appreciated!

Thanks
Lena

Hi Lena,

Welcome to RootsChat

Since their first child appears to have been born in Derbyshire, I would look for a marriage in that area if you have not already done so.  Unfortunately it does not show up on FreeBMD yet or on the IGI.

Have you tracked Samuel and Charlotte through any other census?  You could ask for a look-up on the Derbyshire board for Samuel in 1851 and Charlotte on the Leicestershire board.  Someone may be able to track down some possible families.  Curiously the only Charlotte Grimley showing on the 1861 census born 1840 ish in Leicestershire is already married to Richard Grimley and she was born in the same village as your Charlotte.  Was Charlotte married before she met Samuel?  I can't find a Samuel Taylor who matches your criteria though.  Several born in Derbyshire around the right time but none born in or near Ilkstone.

This is very curious.  ???

Hi Nell

Thanks for your reply!

I haven't tracked them on the 1851 census, I will post a message asking for lookup's like you suggested.

I did notice that married Charlotte Grimley on the 1861 and did wonder whether it was the same Charlotte, does seem a coincidence, but she is also on the 1871 census as still being married to Richard, so don't think this is the same person??

I am not sure if Charlotte was married before she met Samuel.

Will keep searching

Thanks for your help!

Hi Lena

Had another look at 1861.  There is a family in Ilkeston in 1861 at RG9/2437/6 page 6 - Samuel and Charlotte Gilbert aged 28 and 22 respectively.  Their birth places match your Samuel and Charlotte.  They already had a couple of children and father-in-law was there too!

Perhaps Samuel was married before he met Charlotte??

How bizarre about that Samuel and Charlotte Gilbert, the places of birth match up. Could they have changed their name to taylor for some reason??  Though i know annie was def born in 1872 (i have her birth cert). Hmmmm very puzzling!!

Joanne -  I will have a closer look at the census see if any of those Samuels could be the right one

Cheers!!

OK, I can't resist adding to the intrigue.......

Remember Charlotte and Samuel GILBERT 1861 right places of birth etc....

1881 in full

William CRIPPS   Head  4   Moreton, Berkshire, Gardiner
Charlotte CRIPPS   Wife   M   41   Sheephead, Leicester
Ellen CRIPPS   Dau 12   Reading, Berkshire Scholor
Ann CRIPPS   Dau  9   Reading, Berkshire Scholor
William CRIPPS   Son  8   Reading, Berkshire Scholor
James CRIPPS   Son  6   Heston, Middlesex Scholor

1891

William Cripps is claiming to be a widower, living as a boarder in Hammersmith along with son James CRIPPS from 1881 (age 15, born Hounslow)
RG12/36 fol 170 p20

this made me wonder... was he really a widower?

Look what turns up

1891

GILBERT Charlotte 1842 Shepshead, Leicestershire, Head  Wid
GILBERT William 1873 Reading, Berkshire, Son
GILBERT Frederick 1878 Hounslow, Middlesex, Son
GILBERT Mary 1884 Hounslow, Middlesex, Daughter

RG12/1025 fol 41 p25

Where is Annie?  More to the point, what name is she using.

Frederick Cripps 1880  Hounslow Middlesex England Son

oh my gosh!  I think you may be on to something here.  When Charlotte left Samuel Taylor for William Cripps, on the following census, Samuel claimed he was a widower, which we know he wasn't as Charlotte was still alive. So perhaps you are right, she was still alive after the 1891 census where William says he is a widower.

i'd not been able to find Charlotte after the 1881 census, so this is very exciting!

one more question though, where did the Grimley name come from, on Annie (Charlotte's Daughter) Birth cert it says Charlottes name was formerly Grimley?  (could this be her birth surname?

Thanks for all your help so far!! :)
