Brain in a muddle with Prices from Aberkenfig, Bridgend
« on: Saturday 04 June 16 13:53 BST (UK) »
I'm not new to genealogy, but for some reason I'm going round in circles here and cant seem to move forward. Am I missing something or is it a dead end? Thankyou for your patience reading this.
My great grandfather was Percy Price born 1889 in Aberkenfig to a single woman named Ann (Annie) Price born 1868 in Cowbridge. I know Percy spent time in a care home in Bridgend and also lived with an uncle for a while. I have census records and certs. He married Edith Edwards and had 4 daughters (1 died of TB along with Edith and the girls went to live with Edith's family although possibly the youngest was adopted out). We haven't been able to trace the girls, it's said they moved to London.
*Primarily* Im trying to research Percy's ancestry, his maternal grandparents were James Price born 1838 in Vowchurch, Herefordshire and Mary Davies born c1838 in Glamorgan.
James baptism cert gives parents as Samuel and Ann Price. He is with them in Vowchurch in 1841. I have purchased a marriage cert for a James Price & Mary Davies 1867, married Bridgend district. I thought it was my people, but James' father was not Samuel! So it throws up questions, is it the wrong cert, or is it correct but I've got the wrong James on the census? No age is given for bride and groom on the cert. BUT they married in Penllyn, where some of James and Mary's children were born and James and Mary are on the 1871 Penllyn census with their 2 eldest children. I can't see another James Price in Herefordshire so I believe he's mine, with father Samuel. Obviously we don't know where the James on the marriage cert was actually born. James died 1881, Mary died 1911 in Bridgend asylum.

What are the full details given on the certificate you have?Perhaps they will help decide whether this is a different real couple or some error has happened.

There is a tree on An...y which has a James Price born Vowchurch 1838 with parents Samuel & Ann.  In 1841 this James is with parents in Vowchurch.  In 1851 he still with parents & siblings in Longtown (7 miles from Vowchurch).

Name   Age
Samuel Price   37
Ann Price   33
James Price   12
Ann Price   9
Thomas Price   6
Mary Price   3
Catherine Price   12 Mo

In 1861 this James is shown as in Brimfield (abt 35 miles north of Longtown & Vowchurch) and is occupation is shown as a Cooper:

Name   James Price
Age                          21
Estimated Birth Year   1840
Relation                 Workman
Gender                  Male
Where born         Vowchurch, Herefordshire, England
Civil parish            Brimfield
County/Island         Herefordshire
Country   England
Registration district   Tenbury
Sub-registration district   Tenbury
ED, institution, or vessel   6
Household schedule number   11
Piece   2083
Folio   59
Page number   3
Household Members
Name   Age
Thomas Cook
Sarah Cook
James Price
Emma Town

Your James is shown as a dairyman and born 1833 St Margarets, Hereford,  on the 1871 census.  Obviously ages are very deceptive on census documents.  I can see only one likely death for a James Price in Glamorgan in 1881 and that was in Dec:

Deaths Dec 1881   (>99%)
PRICE    James    46    Bridgend    11a   356

that gives a dob of 1835.

I have not found a baptism for a James Price baptised St Margarets at anytime (of Familysearch).

I have not found the 1871 census for the James Price, Cooper on the 1861 census, so he could be your man in Penllyn but I think there may be some doubt

What was the fathers name on the marriage cert?

Ray
Denham [Hertford & London], Carter [Somerset], Francis, Badger [Pembroke, Glamorgan]

this is a bit confusing. Percy's grandmother on 1891 is Mary b Llanelly Carmartheshire c1842. annie is aged 23 b Cowbridge

yet go back to 1881 in Aberkenfig and Mary is b c1838 in Wenvoe! James again b st Margarets, hereford and now a railway worker.

Apologies for delayed reply. Although James Price stated he was born in St Margarets, I couldnt find a baptism and I believe he was born in Vowchurch which is 1.5 miles away, both are tiny places. Possibly he lived in St Margarets as a small child and assumed he was born there, suppose he didnt care what went on the census. MABEL yes I was puzzled by Wenvoe!! I cant understand why she stated this...
(I've given up after 6 years trying to find Mary, especially on Annie's birth cert the mother is named as Margaret. Either a Margaret reg'd the birth and an error was made, or James married Margaret who then died and he married her sister Mary.)
RAYDEN this is my dilemma, I just dont know :( I assumed the birthplace was Vowchurch as couldnt find a St Margaret's record, so thought the father was Samuel...but the marriage record says otherwise unless Ive bought the wrong one. Thankyou.
The details on the marriage cert I bought list James Price's father as James Price (mason), and Mary's father as Morgan Davies (collier). 20/12/1867, Penllyn.

Addresses were just given as 'Penllyne'. And ages were 'of age'.

just read this and thought I would just add a little something from experience of my family, hope you don't mind and it may help. my grt grandmother started life as Elizabeth on baptism cert then became Lizzie on marriage cert then in the censuses started as Lizzie then Eliza then became of all things Lilian!!! which she remained till she died in Australia the otherside of the world... so she was quite an adventurer it was only cos of children who were all the same on the censuses I knew it was the same person.
Also on another stem I had a 3x grt grandmother who was known as Mary but actually she was a Margaret on her marriage and baptism  threw me for a while but apparently it was very common for people to just put their nicknames down on any documents. Took me years to figure it all out.
Good luck with your research
Liz :)
