Ellen Dunn of Philadelphia - Where did she go after 1880?
« on: Monday 20 June 16 23:30 BST (UK) »
I have hit a brick wall!

Ellen Dunn
DOB - 1859
Place of birth - Philadelphia

Parents - Martin Dunn and Mary Brophy (immigrants from Ireland)

1860 US Census: Age 1
https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:MXR3-3F7
Year: 1860; Census Place: Philadelphia Ward 19, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; Roll: M653_1169; Page: 93; Image: 97; Family History Library Film: 805169

1870 US Census: Age 10
Year: 1870; Census Place: Philadelphia Ward 25 District 82, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; Roll: M593_1412; Page: 44A; Image: 91; Family History Library Film: 552911

1880 US Census: Age 19
Year: 1880; Census Place: Philadelphia, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; Roll: 1184; Family History Film: 1255184; Page: 40B; Enumeration District: 520; Image: 0083

I can not find any definitive connections after 1880 - marriage, death, etc.

Thank you!

Here is one possibility - a birth record showing the mother as Ellen Dunn:

But I don't see a marriage record or any other records that I can tie to this family.

Have you located obituaries for her father Martin (1890) or siblings Patrick Joseph Dunn (1910) or Mary Ann Dunn Franklin (1917)  to see if Ellen is mentioned ?

Hi Sandra,

Below is a copy of Martin Dunn's obituary which does not make any mention of his children.

In reviewing my previous research I came across the burial plot for the Dunn/Brophy families in New Cathedral Cemetery in Philadelphia.  Below is a listing of who is in this plot.

Section: J, Block: 5, Lot: 12 (Deed Holder: Martin Dunn)

Brophy, Ann, buried 7 July 1892 (age 53)*
Brophy, Eliza, buried 3 July 1905 (age 67)*
Brophy, Patrick, buried 3 February 1882 (age 49)*
Dunn, Annie, buried 7 January 1879 (age 19)*
Dunn, Jane, buried 7 April 1894 (no age is provided)*
Dunn, Martin, buried 19 May 1890 (no age is provided)*
Dunn, Mary, buried 21 August 1874 (age 45)*
Dunn, Nellie, buried 27 May 1953 (age 85)
Dunn, Patrick, buried 23 December 1890 (age 1)*

*All of these individuals have been accounted for.

I believe that Nellie Dunn might actually be Ellen Dunn but the birth dates appear to be wildly off.  According to the cemetery records Nellie would have been born around 1868.  According to the US Census records she would have been born around 1859-1860.  I have not been able to locate a Pennsylvania death certificate for either Ellen or Nellie Dunn from 1953.  It is possible that she lived out of state and her remains were transported to Philadelphia for burial.

Yes, I did see the find a grave entries for the Dunn Family and the death notice for Martin - no death notice/obituary for Patrick Joseph or Mary Ann Franklin though - there is also a slight age discrepancy for Ellen on census - 2 enumerations for 1870 - one born 1865 and aged 5 years - the other born 1861 and aged 9 years.

Thank you for tracking this information down.  It does appear that Ellen and Nellie are one in the same.  I don't know how the birth dates could be that wildly off.  If 1859 or 1860 was her actually birth year she would have been 94 or 95 - not 85.

Everything else does appear to line up - included the other Dunn relatives.

Thank you again for helping me to find another missing piece of my family tree!
