Can you help with my Hammond family??
« on: Tuesday 21 June 16 02:14 BST (UK) »
Hi All,

I'm having issues with cross referencing my Great Grandfather Thomas Hammond with his father apparently Percy Hammond (i'll come to this in a bit).

The information I have of Thomas Hammond is..

- He died in 1959 aged 68 (This is from his grave stone at Lutton / Sutton St Mary's Church in Lincolnshire).

- It was mentioned through the family that he was from West Ham, and to help clarify this I have found Thomas in Holbeach St Matthews as a Boarder with a Foreman family on the 1911 census, and he has put 'West Ham Essex'. Age on here is 22.

- He enrolled in WW1 on the 15th of November 1915, and he has put his age down as 25.

- He married Rose Ellen Foreman on the 27th of December 1926.

- I have ordered a copy of the marriage certificate, and it has his fathers name as Percy Hammond (deceased) and his fathers line of work is an Ink Manufacturer. Thomas put his own age as 36.

- I have found Thomas on the 1939 census at Holbeach St Matthews. Date of birth given 28 Aug 1890.

And this is where I get stumped... As I am unable to cross reference a Thomas as a child and Percy as a father in either the 1891 or the 1901 censuses to help confirm Percy as his father. And also, I can not find a Thomas Hammond born in 1890, near West Ham.

Any help, or even pointing me in the right direction will be greatly received.

Many thanks,
Rob

If you can't trace the father, then try the mother.  It might help if we had her name too, and any siblings.

Welcome to Rootschat  :)

Do you have his military record? Are there any clues there?

Thanks all.

I or the family have no indication on Thomas' mothers name. Just a father as Percy Hammond (deceased), of which is on the marriage certificate (Thomas Hammond to Rose Ellen Foreman).

Thomas was only married to Rose Ellen Foreman.

Regarding military records of Thomas, I could only find his Medal Card. Service number 21516.

Other than being born around 1890, in or around London is all the information I have. I really hope this is not a dead end.

How do you know the date of enrolment and his age?

Hi Heywood,

We have his army pay book.

It details his age (25), enrollment date (15/11/1915) and service number (21516). Also mentioning him being assigned to the 1st Bat Lincolnshire Regiment. There is a will within the book, but that only refers to Rose Ellen Foreman, no other members of family.

Thanks. I thought it odd as the medal card doesn't show it.
