Sea captain's record
« on: Sunday 26 June 16 20:24 BST (UK) »
This is from a sea captain's record in 1857.  It shows the names of the ships on which he served.

The first note reads: "These vessels were under the American flag".

The second one says: "These vessels were Packets between Lpool and New York carrying mails".

The third one is my problem:  "These vessels are Iron Steamers built by ......"

Any suggestions are welcome.

Jean

Looks to me like "These vessels are Iron Steamers built by me & I am the principal owner".

Now that you say, it certainly looks like that.   I knew that the captain was involved in overseeing the building of the second ship, but otherwise I have only seen him as captain.

Do you know where I can find anything about owners of ships?

How wonderful !

Unfortunately the two vessels mentioned on the captain's record don't appear on the 1857 Ships List.

There is a lot more to searching vessels and captains and owners than I knew about...

I think I'll have to go look for a board which deals in shipping.

Thank you both very much.

Jean

Can you give us the names of the two vessels?

I have put the details on the "Immigrants & Emigrants - General" board under "Owners of ships in the 1840s and 1850s".
