Hi,

I have a handwriting problem with an entry in the 1841 England Census for Alice Brand.

In the "whether born in Scotland, Ireland or Foreign Parts" column, I think the census taker has written "in [or 'on'] Continent".

I have attached a snippet. Does this look right to you? I would really appreciate a second opinion.  :)

Thanks!

Looks like continent to me hsfam, I thought at first it didn't end in a t but when you compare the writing for the occupations which look to me like independent and servant, the end letter looks the same so definitely a t at the end.

Have you got this person on later censuses, and if so what is her birthplace?

I think I found her in 1851- born in Middlesex London!

I just found that. If I have the right person, the 1861 also says Middlesex, St Pancras  ::)

Yes, exactly, carol8353 and JenB! That's what's so very strange. But that's OK. I don't necessarily believe the information is correct but I just wanted to check I wasn't making a mistake with interpreting what had been written. At the very least, it will give me another avenue to investigate with this ancestor.

Thanks, everyone! I really appreciate the sanity check. She is a very frustrating person to research. One of my lovely brick walls. But I think I knocked out a couple of bricks earlier today with her so this census information will now be added to the mix and I'll see whether I can create a few more cracks!

Genealogy is such fun!  ;D
