Chesterfield Children born and died between Census's
« on: Saturday 02 July 16 11:31 BST (UK) »
Can anyone help please.
Our oral history has always suggested that my wife's grandparents had 13 children, of which I can only find 9 recorded in the census. Checking Family Search and Ancestry there are potentially 16 names of children born and died between census of which there wold be no census record. None of them have parents listed!
Any suggestions as to how I can link any to my wife's grandparents??
Many thanks in advance.
Steve

What sort of time period are we talking about?

If the other 9 were baptised you could look for baptisms and narrow possibles down between the births of surviving children.  Two born a quarter or two apart for example can't have had the same parents.

Great advice - many thanks. The 16 potential 'unknown' children were born between March 1894 when they married - and 1910 - and don't appear in the 1901/11 census'. Where would I look for baptism records??
Thanks in advance
Steve

The 1911 census will tell you how many children they had - if only to confirm the oral history.

And, it will state how many had died.

Thanks K Gerrard - now why did I not think of that! 1911 census shows 9 born alive and 2 have died. Are you aware of Bolsover Baptism records available online so I can try and find the other 2?
Cheers

According to the information on GenUKI, they should be available on FamilySearch.

Checking the description of Derbyshire, Church of England Parish Registers, and what they hold for Bolsover, there are baptisms for 1903 to 1873 (with some gaps) ::)

Looks like you need to go to Derbyshire Record Office?

Its a long way from Australia to Derby, especially as we don't like flying! Do you know if they will do a look up there for a fee?
Cheers
