William Webb baptism record c 1799
« on: Saturday 02 July 16 15:37 BST (UK) »
Hi,

I am trying to find sources for a family tree I was given from a family member.

on the tree I was given it has listed
William Webb born 1799
Parents Thomas Webb (1775-) and Johanna (1777-)
Married Mary (1803-) from Ogbourne at Purton, Wiltshire.
he had a son Charles Webb (1831-)

I have found them in the 1841 and 1851 censuses, the 1851 mentions his birth place as Stratton St Margaret.

The only baptism record I can find that is similar is this https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:J7DP-LNL but then that means the parents are incorrect.

There was a William Webb born to a Thomas and Joanna but he was born in 1810 in Chisledon.

From what I can see the person who originally made a tree has done so incorrectly.

I hope someone can help me confirm which is the correct baptism, I am leaning towards the 1798 one.

Thanks

Hi ben170292,

In the transcripts for Stratton St.Margarets there is this entry;

27-5-1798 William Webb s/o John & Alithia.

Looking further for marriages I find this entry;

9-4-1798 John Webb of Broad Blunsdon to Atheleah Kean, otp  married in Wanborough

As an aid you may like to go to the Wilts on-line parish clerk at this address ;
http://www.wiltshire-opc.org.uk/genealogy/index.php/parish-directory

You may need to register first (its free) and you then have a range of parishes some of which have transcriptions which you can view.

If you wish more help please ask.

Hi Alan,

So would you assume that the parents I originally had are incorrect?

Thanks for the link, do you know of a similar one for Berkshire also?

Hi Ben,

If the William you have followed in the cenuses says Stratton St.Margaret, then I would go with
that one. Have you found him in later ones?

I don't know of a similar site for Berks unfortunately.

I'm off out now so will not be back on-line till this evening (Sth Australian time)

The 1841 just says Wiltshire, the 1851 says Stratton St Margaret.

I have just found a William Well and Mary Well in the 1871 census, From what I see it is the same family but they have misspelled Webb because their son Abner is in it as Webb.

He is listed as Stratton also, so I am going to say that I have been given the wrong names.
