Finding Frederick Barks in 1891 & 1901 (Notts, Leics, Kent?)
« on: Sunday 03 July 16 21:39 BST (UK) »
Frederick was born 07 Apr 1864 at New Radford, Nottingham, the son of Walter & Esther Barks, and I have him in 1871 & 1881 with his parents & brother James, but after that I can find nothing with any certainty until his marriage in 1901:

12 Oct 1901, Erith, Kent
Frederick Barks, 37, Bachelor, Mechanic [of] 17 Mill Road, Northumberland Heath. Father: Walter Barks, Lace Maker.
Annie Guess, 33, Spinster [of] 14 The Rushes, Loughborough. Father: Ishmael Guess, Marine Store Dealer
Witnesses: Thomas Kent & Elizabeth Sarah Cobb

The marriage wasn't successful and there is a newspaper article stating that she left him in 1904 but he returned for 8-weeks in 1910.  He then walked to Coventry for work, even though she had given him the train fare, and eventually she lost all contact with him until she tracked him down for maintenance in 1920.  He possibly died in Loughborough in 1929.

I don't need any information on Annie, although I'm mystified as to how & where they may have met and how they came to marry in Kent, given that she was a 33-year-old spinster who still lived at home.

As ever, all help greatly appreciated.

Modified as the 1929 death isn't him - he's on the 1939 register in Coventry.

there is a branch line off of Ambrose that lives around Coventry labelled from 1901 onwards ...use freebmduk with Warwickshire , type * as All, with Barks to see that family base...... noting that several Frederick entries appear so be careful when assuming your Frederick is mentioned in 37 cos this certificate reference appears>

Deaths Dec 1941   Barks    Frederick    77    Coventry    6d   924

You may have to bring up Coventry or Aston census and read entire folio as B may appear as S, H or other scenario if in fact he was living in area at time.; and K may appear indexed as S, H or B.

Strange some parts are stated as living in Kent considering family name mainly around Notts.

Maybe Frederick did some mechanic training in Kent ?

Thanks, yes, that looks like his death in 1941, although I'm going bog-eyed trawling through census as he could literally be anywhere.  Annie had a brother who was working in the Sheffield area in 1901 as an engineers fitter, so I wondered if he might somehow be the connection, but its equally as possible that Frederick was working in Loughborough and then moved on to work in Kent.

I noticed that the address he gave when he married was occupied by someone named Kent, and one of the witnesses was Thomas Kent, but I haven't had much luck in tracing him either!

It is the only one in Nottingham between 1860 and 1870.

Hi GG,

No, this is Frederick's birth:  BARKS Frederick, 1864, Apr-Jun, Radford, 7b / 176

As far as I am aware he had not been married previously, and the marriage record for 1901 states him to be a bachelor.

Ah I see, I hadn't realised that Radford was a separate registration district from Nottingham.  I had assumed that it was an area of Nottingham.

Ok so you're still trying to find Fred in 1891 and 1901 then.  I'll have a look and see if I can find anything.

Well I went through 91 and 01 with just Frederick ticked and no surname, birth county of Notts.  Nothing leapt out as a possible mistranscription.

He certainly changed occupations.  1881 has him as a finisher of lace, 1939 has engineer (munitions? Retired).

What was his occupation on his marriage certficate?  Was he still something in lace or had it changed?

Hi GG, All the details I have are in my original post - marriage details copied below.

12 Oct 1901, Erith, Kent
Frederick Barks, 37, Bachelor, Mechanic [of] 17 Mill Road, Northumberland Heath. Father: Walter Barks, Lace Maker.
Annie Guess, 33, Spinster [of] 14 The Rushes, Loughborough. Father: Ishmael Guess, Marine Store Dealer
Witnesses: Thomas Kent & Elizabeth Sarah Cobb

It seems he was a bit of a drinker & gambler, so maybe he was drunk somewhere on each of the census nights, as I've tried all I can think of to find him but failed dismally so he's currently on my 'try again later' pile !
