Looking for Lilian Kenyon, Australia
« on: Tuesday 05 July 16 06:22 BST (UK) »
William Kenyon born 1884 Collingwood, Victoria, Australia, the son of Charles Manifold Kenyon, Felt Hatter and Cecilia Kenyon nee Smiley.  Charles and Cecilia married in 1879.

I first find William Kenyon in NZ in August 1924.  He and William Gordon Russell buy a business "The Reliance Plating Company" in lower Tory street, Wellington, NZ.  William is an Electroplater.  This partnership was dissolved in the NZ Supreme Court in May 1925 as Russell had "left the Dominion".

William and Lilian appear in a NZ 1925 electoral roll (unable to access details).
They are in the 1928 electoral roll living at 16 Stone street, Miramar, Wellington.
In 1935 and 1938 they are living at 55 Crofton Road, Ngaio, Wellington.  After this Lilian appears to disappear from the electoral rolls.
In 1932/1933 Lilian Kenyon is found travelling to/from Australia a number of times (source Familysearch) with children W. G. Kenyon (William George), B Kenyon (Bruce Manifold) and a male infant.  It appears that these children are the children of William Kenyon and Annie Walker nee Hunt.  The births of the above 2 children were re-registered in November 1945, after William and Annie's marriage.  I found her in May 1937 travelling alone from Sydney.

William Kenyon married Annie Walker nee Hunt on 24 October 1945 at 55 Crofton Road, Ngaio, Wellington.  The m/c states that William is a widower and his wife died on 12 September 1945.  I can find no death in the NZ BMD index for Lilian.  I have also checked the Karori cemetery, Wellington records.

William died in 1950 and Annie in 1951, both in Wellington, NZ.

I have found (Familysearch) a Lilian Kenyon who travelled from Fremantle, Australia to the UK on the "Strathaird", arriving in London on 20 October 1951.  She is 56 years of age (b c 1895), A Bookstall Asst.  Address in UK is 74 Balcarres Road, Leyland.  Country of previous residence is given as NZ.

I have also found a Mrs L Kenyon travelling London to Fremantle, arriving on 29 July 1954 on the "Orion".  Address in Australia is given as 60 Bendooley street, Bowral, NSW, Australia.

Who is Lilian?  When/where did she marry William Kenyon?  When/where did she die?

Any suggestions as to further research welcome.

Wendy

Well, Lancashire BMD online and Free BMD UK online both have a Lillie KENYON's death in the July-September quarter of 1945.

At the Lancashire website we learn Lillie was aged 52 years.

The English certs have scant info...

Thanks JM for your suggestion.

However I am not sure that it is the right one as she has also been called Lilian and I find it unusual that she would later in life use "Lillie".  I will however put this on hold just in case you are right and see what further research digs up.

I have found in the Victoria, Australia Probates a Lilian J Kenyon of Clifton Hill who died on 21 August 1955.  Her occupation was Packer.  She appears to be the daughter of James Robert Symons and Rose Ann Stafford.  Not sure whether this is the right one either!

NZ Electoral Roll 1925 Wellington South.
Lilian KENYON, married, 33 Hankey Street
William KENYON, electroplater, 33 Hankey Street

I am not familiar with NZ electoral rolls, so I do not know if that 'married' is actually confirming that that Lilian is the wife of that William.  They are both at the same address, but she could be a wife of another male named KENYON perhaps a brother or cousin or uncle of William .....

The death I found in Lancashire is for the 'right' timeframe to be a death in September 1945.

...............  William is an Electroplater.  .............
William and Lilian ..... NZ 1925 electoral roll (unable to access details)................

There is a record in the Police Gazzette 1924 for a warrant for the arrest of William Kenyon electroplater for disobeying a magistrates order to support his child.

Just a reminder to helpers, Wendy already has a good deal of information.
May be worth a read before too much research, just as a refresher ;).

The year 1945 contains the following events-

Death of the Lillie KENYON in UK
The marriage of Annie WALKER to William KENYON
The re-registration of the children of William KENYON to show Annie as mother.

It is clear Annie had been sharing a nearby Crofton Road address from as early as 1938, Lillian KENYON is there too ,in 1938 but is absent  after that. She made some trips with the children between Australia and NZ.

She then left William, the children and Annie and "disappeared".

By 1910, William KENYON was in NSW where he was in business with one Charles LAURIE.
They advertised their electroplating business in Peter Street Woolloomooloo. This is an editorial item.
http://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/117966293

Another item says they were late of Bennett and Wood.
http://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/229969118

To confirm the sightings, this item in 1915 gives us the first name of William for KENYON in partnership with LAURIE.
Here in trouble for theft.
