Death of miller in Lakenheath
« on: Friday 08 July 16 12:14 BST (UK) »
Hi,

I have discovered that a miller was killed in an accident in 1870.  I'd be grateful of any further information... Name of deceased, how he died?  Only thing I have to go on is a note stating that he died in January 1870?

Thanks in advance,
Windy

Hi
As you know the report is in a newspaper on another site .the man was John Williams but there is some kind of technical error and the bottom of the page is missing. It does seem he was trapped in the machinery by his right arm and it took a while to get him out.He had a wife and four children but the rest is unreadable.(Info from the free bit I can read on the results page).
The 1871 census has
Elizabeth R  Williams widow 24 miller employing one man Mildenhall
William W 6 Lakenheath
John 4
Ellen 2

Hope your sails keep turning Windy

ps John Williams was 25 from his burial 15.1.1870

Thanks everyone.  That has really helped though I cannot work out which of the mills it was?

Also, interestingly another death was recorded here relating to a windmill.  A young lad, James Batch, was struck on the head by the sails of a windmill his father occupied, in April 1832.

Not only where there corn milling windmills here, but also drainage mills; Williams was clearly killed in a corn mill (wind?) but young Batch is less clear.

Hi Lisarobinson87,

Thanks for that!

It clarifies that it was a windpump rather than a windmill.  There were about four in the fens surrounding the village, but at least it has shortened the options as the two corn mills are now out of the picture!!!
