Penwortham Address location help required 1851 Census
« on: Monday 11 July 16 13:28 BST (UK) »
Hi there,
I'm researching my Chadwick ancestors and found the family on the 1851 Census living at 65 Gillow Fold, Penwortham, Lancs. What's puzzling is that I can't find any other reference to Gillow Fold!.. On modern maps there is a Giller Fold in Penwortham. I was wondering if anyone could please search the adjacent streets on the 1851 Census to see if Gillow and Giller are possibly one of the same?..

Regards

John

To search the 1851 cenus entry we need the census reference or at least the name of the person.
Giller Fold is shown on this map http://maps.nls.uk/geo/explore/sidebyside.cfm#zoom=17&lat=53.7366&lon=-2.7048&layers=171&right=BingHyb

It is Giller Fold on the 1848-1849 map and all the subsequent ones

Giller Fold on the 1848-1849 map has no surrounding streets. Are you sure 65 is not the schedule number?

Image 1 of the area gives the Enumeration District - Shaw Bridge is mentioned, then Gillow Fold to  Charnock Moss, and terminates at the Hutton boundary.

As Stan has pointed out, 65 is the schedule number for the Chadwick family.

Actually I think it is Skew Bridge, which is the bridge over the railway line - B5254.

Gillow/Giller Fold is probably on what is now Giller Drive.

There were still mistakes being made in the name.

From the Lancashire Evening Post - Thursday 13 December 1934
KIRKHAM. - On the 11th inst., at the residence of his daughter (Mrs. Varley, Windy-ridge, Gillow Fold, Skew Bridge, Penwortham), Peter P. Kirkham, the beloved husband of the late Mary Kirkham, in his 73rd year.
