Research for English Pvt. George Blackwell
« on: Monday 11 July 16 20:23 BST (UK) »
Hey guys! I'm new here! I begin my journey here with a question about my great - great uncle, George Blackwell, who fought in Greece in WW2. As I know, he was a Private, he died in December 29, 1944, he was 24 years old and he is buried at Phaleron War Cemetery, but I don't know where to look for his birth, christening and more information about him.

Your help is much appreciated.

Hi and welcome to Rootschat

The cwgc entry shows he was with the East Surrey Regiment Service number 6149284 - no full birthyear

Do you know where he was born and who his parents were?

Welcome to Rootschat.

If he was 24 on his death, that gives a DOB in 1920. From Freebmd there are 3 born then but two have middle initial

Births Jun 1920
Blackwell    George    Baker    Wandsworth    1d   1490
Blackwell    George W J    Prudence    W.Ham    4a   339

Births Dec 1920
Blackwell    George H    Hoby    Islington    1b   422

Do any of those mother's maiden names ring a bell? I see he served in the East Surrey Regiment 1/6th Bn, so was he born in the Surrey area?

Sorry Carole - didn't see your post, but we are thinking along the same lines!

Unfortunately, I don't know anything about his parents. I can calculate that he was born in c. 1924. I also know that he had a relationship with a Greek girl named Eleni, and she gave birth to a boy.

He died in 1944 aged 24 so that gives a birth date of 1920 not 1924.

I believe that he was born in Surrey, too.

Could you please explain me the "1d 1490 / 4a 339 / 1b 422" thing? :-\ (I'm new at genealogy stuff)
