Frederick William Gates
« on: Tuesday 12 July 16 17:38 BST (UK) »
I am looking for any information on Frederick William Gates, in particular his parents.  He married Jane Armour Craig in 1898 at Bridge of Weir, Renfrewshire.

They had three sons - Fred (died young), John Seaton and William Stanley who was born on 29/7/1911.  William later became a professional golfer and came out to Africa.

Any information on the Gates/Craig families would really be appreciated.

If they married in Scotland you should be able to find the marriage in the Statutory Registers on Scotlands People website. You will need to purchase some units but you can download the marriage details.
The Scottish marriage details include both the mother and the father's names of the bride and the groom.
Places of interest;
Lancashire, West Yorkshire, Southern Ireland, Scotland.

Looking at the 1901 census in Scotland - Frederick William was born in London c 1875.

There is a baptism in London on April 29th 1875 of a Frederick William Gates - father John Levi Gates -- mother Ann Rebecca. Occupation of father - Butcher. Abode Turner Rd (probably Tower Hamlets) Looks like his birth date was Oct 29 1874,

An older brother John was baptised a few days beforehand!
We are not sure if this is your Frederick though - and obtaining his marriage details would confirm the parents names.
Places of interest;
Lancashire, West Yorkshire, Southern Ireland, Scotland.

Thank you so much.  Does the census include Jane as his wife?  I shall have to explore buying credits. Do you know when the records started including all the details of the parents?

If you subscribe to Ancestry -- transcribed records of the Scotland censuses are on that site. You can only see the filmed copy of the actual census page on Scotlands People (which means purchasing credits to view them -- unfortunately you can't buy a subscription - so your credits disappear quite quickly!)

On the 1901 census the entry for Frederick William shows;
Fred Gates aged 26 Head Ships Steward born London
Jane A Gates wife aged 25 born Glasgow.

The couple are living in Ardenslate Rd, 4 Victoria Cres, Dunoon, Argyllshire.

Re marriages -- in Scotland, Civil Registration only started in 1855 - and it is from that date that you find both parents names on marriage certificates. On death certificates you will also find both parents names, irrespective of age at death. However you can only access them on Scotlands People --- and it is only in Scotland (not in England, Wales or Ireland) - where these records are so detailed.

I cannot immediately see a marriage in Scotland in the year or location you mention though. Maybe I'm missing something!

Places of interest;
Lancashire, West Yorkshire, Southern Ireland, Scotland.

Thanks so much for the information.  I went on to Scotlandspeople and found a marriage, but only by putting in Craig as her surname, not using her Christian names at all.

Unfortunately the South African exchange rate is so awful that I cannot justify the costs of buying credits at the moment, so shall follow up on John Levi and Ann Rebecca and see if anything comes of that.

OK -- at least you found it, which is more than I did!

Details are;
13/10/1898 Beechwood Bridge, Renfrewshire

Fred Gates aged 24, Ship Steward, Bachelor - 84 Cathcart St, Glasgow - father John Gates, Butcher, mother Annie Gates maiden surname Watson? deceased.

Janie Craig aged 22, Domestic Servant, Beechwood Bridge. Father Thomas Craig, Fishing Rod Manufacturer. Mother Agnes Craig, maiden surname Ross, deceased.

It seemed a pity for you to be so near, yet so far!
So the baptism found in the London baptisms on Ancestry for Frederick William looks like the correct one -- his father was John and a Butcher. Mother was 'Ann' or variant. They did like 'varying' their christian names didn't they!
Places of interest;
Lancashire, West Yorkshire, Southern Ireland, Scotland.
