Sorry Scouseboy, I should have explained that I knew that. John Poole is the brother of my great grandfather (who as a seaman really could have gone anywhere) so I am searching locally first. I have also tried the 1939 register but no joy.

Merchant seamen (if they were away from home,  at sea,   on the date in September 1939)     would not  have been on the 1939 register, probably?

Yes, I hadn't thought of that. As if it wasn't hard enough to find people, he had to be a seaman!

There are  several Navy experts  on Rootschat.. Have a look at the Occupations section,  and consider posting a specific  Merchant Navy  search question.

I'm assuming you have checked on the March 1937 death registration of John Poole in Liverpool North, said to be born 1881.

Transcriptions and NBI are merely finding aids.  They are NOT a substitute for original record entries.

Thanks Scouseboy and BumbleB for your help. I have seen the death in 1937 but I was hoping to find other evidence before I sent for the death certificate that might not be him.  Unfortunately there is another John Poole, also a seaman, who was born in 1882. I wish he had a more unusual name!

There are Seamens Record Cards,    My uncle was a merchant seaman  who died in South Africa in 1933.

I was given help on here  to find his records.   Search on rootschat  for   Merchant Navy record cards.

I've tried to match up the births around that time with deaths/burials. I can find the John William Poole's baptism at St Paul's CE Liverpool in Nov 1880 but can't find him and his family afterwards perhaps they left the area or emigrated. The 1937 death index is a possibility for your John Poole born in Birkenhead.

1880 Q4 POOLE John William Liverpool - ?
1881 Q1 POOLE John Birkenhead - ?
1881 Q3 POOLE John Toxteth Park - TP Cemetery 1 Oct 1882 aged 15 months?
1881 Q4 POOLE John Liverpool - L Q3 1882 aged 0 years?
1882 Q4 POOLE John Liverpool - L South Q3 1936 aged 53 years?
1883 Q2 POOLE John Toxteth Park - TP Cemetery 17 May 1932 aged 49 years?
