McLeod - Waikumete Cemetery Headstone Lookup
« on: Thursday 14 July 16 04:54 BST (UK) »
Hallo all!

It has been a wee while.

I have been to Waikumete Cemetery half a dozen times now, searching for my Great, great grandfather Angus Kenneth McLeod, who is supposedly buried there. Alas, I have not managed to find his gravestone, even with council records giving me a location (Plot: Anglican Division E Row 7, Plot 87).

I have wondered for a few years now why he was in Auckland at all, when the entirety of his family were sensibly together down in Woodville.

Here's the link to the find-a-grave listing I created for him a few years ago:

https://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GRid=85661348

Birth:    1853
Nova Scotia, Canada
Death:    Aug. 30, 1918
Auckland, New Zealand

He married in Kumeroa (so again, nowhere near Auckland!), and as mentioned above, his entire family stayed down the southern end of the North Island. His wife died in 1924, and is buried in Woodville. So, why was he up here, and why is he buried alone?

If someone manages to find him, or can point me in the right direction on a map (we got a bit confused as to what rows were what the last couple of times we went), I should be most grateful!

Cheery  :D

Hi Georgia,

Did the cemetery office staff confirm there is a headstone?

The cemetery database

 MCLEOD, ANGUS KENNETH
Plot :                                  ANGLICAN DIVISION E Row 7, Plot 87
Interment Type:              Burial
Title:                                  MR
Surname :                        MCLEOD
Given Names:                 ANGUS KENNETH
Age :                                  65
Gender :                            Male
Occupation:                     CHAINMAN
Date Of Death :                30-Aug-1918
Date Of Burial :                01-Sep-1918
Funeral Director :           J JAMIESON
Head Stone Details :      N/A

There may not be a headstone

There are good markers along Eucalyptus Ave showing where E block starts and on top of these markers are numbers telling you more, plot 87 will be towards the bottom of row 7 near Ixia St.

Cheers Janette

Hi, looking on Ancestry it appears there is no Headstone for his grave, so it's no wonder you failed to see it! From the electoral rolls it appears he was living at Matawai, away from his wife so it's possible they were estranged? Might help to explain why he was buried the was he was. And the reason he died (and is buried) in Auckland, I would guess, is because he died in the hospital (I have an ancestor with a similar case).

Cheers.

I shall have to go and have another look! It would be nice to have somewhere to pay my respects.

Interesting about the electoral roll, RK, I haven't got a worldwide sub to Ancestry this year, so can't look at them (*), I hadn't heard about an estrangement; Angus' daughter, Annie, tried very hard to get my grandmother to call my Dad Angus, so she must have got on with him.  ;D

The 1911 ER has him    labourer    Matawai Bay of Plenty
It then says    "Struck off"

If you go to the cemetery office they will be able to help you with the nearest headstones to help pinpoint his resting place

Interesting about the electoral roll, RK, I haven't got a worldwide sub to Ancestry this year, so can't look at them (are you able to email me copies, pretty please?),

Sure, just a minute.

I hadn't heard about an estrangement; Angus' daughter, Annie, tried very hard to get my grandmother to call my Dad Angus, so she must have got on with him.  ;D

I've looked through the marriage write ups for the daughters in the Woodville Examiner, and it really does appear like he was out of the picture (it is always just daughter of Mrs Mcleod, never any mention of Angus which is very odd, even if he were dead it would be daughter of the late Angus Mcleod etc). Maybe she liked him regardless  ;D

(If you haven't got the reports I can send those as well)  :))

I just looked up the newspaper on PP, I see the marriage! The Rev. Gardener is actually my grandmother's grandfather. :-) Small world!

I'm going to visit my Dad in hospital tomorrow, so it will be nice to mention these wee tidbits. :-)

I shall PM you my email address.

I wonder how he wound up in the BOP, and then on to Auckland. I will ask my Dad tomorrow if he recalls his grandmother mentioning any family rifts.  How interesting!

I may go and have a look again at Waikumete on Monday or Tuesday, see what I can find this time. :-)

I will have a jack for him tomorrow, shouldn't be to hard.

Guessing there is no headstone.

Are you sure he is your man ?

I will leave an indicator on the listed site anyhow and you can work it from there ...  8)
