James Allan
« on: Friday 15 July 16 12:47 BST (UK) »
Hi

I am trying to find out the history of my Father's family. Recently, many of you kindly helped me regarding my Mother's family.
My Father was James Allan. He was born in Linlithgow on 14th July 1916. He died in Loughborough on 8th July 1974. His Mother was Ellen (Nellie) Allan. She was unmarried at the time of my Father's birth. Sadly, his birth certificate (Long version) does not declare who his Father was. Although not Gypsies, Ellen and her Father, James Allan, travelled from town to town selling horses, china, linen etc. I believe they were based in Coatbridge/Airdrie. My Father's birth certificate was registered in Airdrie and Coatbridge was mentioned a lot when I was growing up. James Allan is thought to have had a shop in Coatbridge/Airdrie, probably selling second hand goods, china etc. James Allan died in Denny, Scotland I believe.
Ellen Allan married Peter McEwan (Who may have been born in Dundee) in Portsay, but they settled in Alnwick and had two Sons, both of whom are still alive. My Father married Mary Hall in Alnwick and they had ten children, of which I am one.
My Father was wounded at Dunkirk and I think he was in a Surrey Regiment.

Any help would be appreciated.

Hi EADG,

http://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk/

This is a great site, others that use regularly can tell you much more.  You will need to register, and buy credits to view full info or purchase certs.

Other great free sites are www.freebmd.org  England/Wales.  Also www.familysearch.org Worldwide

There is not a lot of info online re census past 1911 or regarding WW2, re the 100 year privacy rule.  Also as most of your request on this thread is based Scotland, people would have to pay with bought credits to view the info for you.

Good luck with your search

Regards Cas

Your parents married 1938 on FreeBMD. The 1939 register index is free to view, credits or a subscription is needed to view full entry. It was updated until 1991, by the NHS any that died after or near the date will be blanked out, untraceable due to privacy rules.

 http://www.findmypast.co.uk/1939register

Other avenues are electrol rolls, which gives names/addresses of those of voting age.

Online family trees connection which need verification, or finding FH family connections online.

I would gleen as much past family info as you can from the elder members of family, while able.

Best wishes

Cas

Maybe this would be better moved to the Scotland board, will request a moderater to move for you, lots have knowledge there, but would register on Scotland's people, to have access to info.

Ellen Allan was born 1882, Peter McEwan 1886, not impossible that your father James Allan b1916 was Peters son prior to marriage, registered under her surname?

When ready would start a separate thread on your Northumberland Hall family, add the link to your mothers (Fannon/Fannan) side found to avoid duplication.

Regards

Hi Cas
Great information and thank you for your help. I am very sure that Peter McEwan (whom I did call Grandad Peter) was not my Father's Father, even though he brought him up as his Son.
