I know this is before the time of compulsory education but I've heard of a school funded or founded by Rector Charles Thorpe in Ryton.

Does anyone know about this school and if there are records?

National Schools:-  Barmoor, Ryton (mixed), was built in 1861 in the memory of the Ven. Archdeacon Thorp for 250 children; average attendance 190; George Laidler, master. Kelly's Directory of Durham, 1890
"National Schools" were set up by the Church of England,  and founded in 1811, under the auspices of the 'National Society for the Education of the Poor,' by Andrew Bell, an Anglican clergyman, at the invitation of members of the Church of England.

You can see the school on the 1895-98 map at https://www.old-maps.co.uk/#/Map/414594/564190/12/100615

Thank you both for info.

Glad to see the school was mixed so I can look for Grandma in any archives as well as her uncles.

I've been googling for any archive on the school but cannot find anything at TWAS or in the National archives database before 1900. There is an 1841 tithe map showing a school in Ryton so it goes way back.

Maybe the archives are with the Thorp records? In Durham?

The map (http://valentine.dur.ac.uk/apps/maps/DurhamTithe/tithezoom.asp?sno=01) is not 1841, as the school and cottages are not on the 1856-58 map https://www.old-maps.co.uk/#/Map/414594/564190/12/100215
