LUCKMAN...worked at 'The Austin' Longbridge

Hi there,
I have been studying the 1939 register..my father George Luckman, worked at 'the Austin' at Longbridge, and listed his occupation as ''Motor engine inspector'..can anyone tell me what this job entailed in 1939 ?
My father had a brother named Frank, (who was about twelve years older than him), who I believe also worked at the same factory in a similiar job..
