Best Way to Scan Photographs
« on: Wednesday 27 July 16 15:34 BST (UK) »
I'd be interested in any advice other genealogists might have on how they scan photos.

When I began this caper 10 years ago, I used to go to our local library and use the scanners in the family history department since I could scan multiple photos at the same time, save to a USB and take home.

Then I got a printer that could scan too and started using that.

Recently, I've seen details of apps that you use on your phone to scan photos. Has anyone used these and do you think they're better, as good or worse than a desktop scanner?

Cheers

Likewise I prefer desktop, although I had a recent problem copying a school photo of my youngest grandson.
Blond hair on the original, when copying at 600dpi the resultant image showed blond hair with a hint of pink.
I ended up taking the original photo to outlet at local supermarket where I got a perfect copy.

Sarah, it depends what you want to do with the scans.

If you want to enlarge and edit, you need a photo with higher resolution. If you just want a quick record of something, that is a different matter.

Also different phones will give you different results, and you also have to have a steady hand.

Thanks for all your points - really helpful. Think I'll stick to the desktop scanner for now.
