Duplicate registrations in Faversham and Folkestone
« on: Friday 29 July 16 13:27 BST (UK) »
Hello, I'm hoping that someone can help me with  the fact that a number of christenings  and marriages are listed as having taken place in both of the parishes of Faversham and Folkestone during the 1700's, was this because the church in Folkestone had been damaged in the Great Storm of 1705 and was considered unsafe ? it seems rather a distance between the two places, the details of the people involved are exactly the same only the place is different.

Crossing my fingers, Brenda

Is it from familysearch film no 1751866

https://familysearch.org/search/catalog/results?count=20&query=%2Bfilm_number%3A1751866

It would not be the first time that they had transcribed all of the records on one film as only one parish.

Family Search and Find my Past both have these details also there is c. for Stephen Butcher              4 Dec 1757 Faversham  listed in England Select Birth and Christenings, but like you I did rather query the Family search details as I know that it is always best to check the original PR's if possible.

Thank you for your very swift reply, I feel that the Folkestone  details are most likely to be the correct ones.

Kind regards, Brenda

I tend to agree with you
FS has 1 record in Faversham - Film 1751866 which is the film that also has Folkestone.
The other 2 films do not have Faversham on them.
FindMyPast says it is Folkestone.

I had an instance in Lancashire where a family with an unusual surname was baptising children at the other end of Lancashire from where they lived.  I checked the original film which had both parishes on it and found they were being baptised in their home parish and the transcript was wrong.

I can resist no longer and, put in my ha'penny's worth.

Not sure about other counties but here are three more examples in Kent.  Ham and Harbledown, Oare and Orlestone, plus one of the more bizarre, Dover and Sturry.  The last is probably due to the Parish of St Mary in Dover!

Regards,
Tony  ???

Dover & Sturry appear on the same film (I only checked one of the Sturry films on the online index)
https://familysearch.org/search/catalog/results?count=20&query=%2Bfilm_number%3A1836196

Oare & Orlestone also on the same film, again I only looked at one film but if it is this one are the other parishes also wrongly indexed
https://familysearch.org/search/catalog/results?count=20&query=%2Bfilm_number%3A1752059

Ham & Harbledown appear on at least two films together with other parishes.

It comes down to checking the primary source and not relying on transcribed records.  The instance I had in Lancashire appeared on the LDS vital records index discs but as I regularly visited one of their centres I was able to establish where the mistake was  ::)

I wonder how many more there are  ???

Familysearch has recorded some of my relatives' baptisms in Elmstone, Kent, instead of Elmsted.

Luckily I was able to find the "real" records on FindMyPast.
Transcribing Essex records for FreeREG.
Current parishes - Burnham, Purleigh, Steeple.
Get in touch if you have any interest in these places!
