John DANIELS
« on: Tuesday 02 August 16 16:35 BST (UK) »
Hi

I need to confirm whether John DANIELS belongs in my tree. To begin with the family surname appears in several guises in the records: DANIEL, DANIELL, DANIELS and DANIELLS.

I know that the John DANIELS I am interested in was born 03 Dec 1815 in Winchmore Hill in Middlesex and baptised on 24 Dec 1815 at All Saints, Edmonton, Middlesex. His parents were William and Rebecca DANIELS.

He then disappears from the records. He is not as far as I can see in the 1841 census. He could, of course, have died, though I can't find an appropriate burial or death record. My guess is that he joined the army.

A possible John DANIEL (aged 56) re-appears in 1871, living in Hackney. He is an army pensioner (artillery), born in Edmonton, Middx. He is married to Elizabeth (51), who is a British subject, but born in Germany. They have a son George (10), born in Kingsland, Hackney.

In 1881, John (66) and Elizabeth (61) are still living in Hackney. He is a general labourer, born in Edmonton. She is still described as a British subject, but born in Germany.

In 1891, John (76) and Elizabeth (71) are still living in Hackney. He is described as a pensioner (soldier), born in Edmonton. She is still described as a British subject, but born in Germany.

By 1901, John (86) and Elizabeth (81) are still living in Hackney, as boarders with the JAMES family. They are both described as living on their own means, by which I assume is meant his army pension. They are described respectively as being born in Tottenham and Hackney - a mistake, but remember neither of them were head of the household, so would not have been giving the information.

In 1902, John dies in Hackney.

In order to confirm whether the John that re-appears in 1871 is my John, it would be helpful to:

(a) track down any surviving army records
(b) find the marriage between John and Elizabeth
(c) find the birth of their son, George.

Any help will be gratefully received.

PS - It would appear that the family were living in Hackney in 1861, though the wife went under the name of Gertrude, though still born in Germany.

Had a quick look at what you have & I notice he was a pensioner of the East India Co. not the British army.

Many thanks. Did you get this from the 1861 census? I could only make out "Labourer in". Now that you say EIC, I can "Labourer in E I Company".

It say labourer, pen I E Comy.
I can't see an appropriate UK marriage or one in Germany or Consular returns.
Assuming he joined aged 18 & did the full 12 years he would have been out by around mid 1840's.
So an 1845-50 marriage is what your looking for.
They may of course not married.
To find her name you will have to get a birth cert. for one of the children.
