« on: Tuesday 02 August 16 18:44 BST (UK) »
Hi
My 3x great grandfather was in Bangalore India in 1851with his family serving with the 25th Regiment of foot- my question is would they be included in any form of census when the 1851 census was carried out in England?

The 1911 Census was the first one to have a full enumeration carried out of the British Army serving overseas, including details of wives and families. In earlier censuses the military authorities only provided the Census Office  with the numbers of officers, other ranks, wives and children, either by place or by regiment. Those serving at home have always been enumerated

The 1851 Census.
Tables showing the numbers and ages of the army and navy at home and abroad; also their distribution, and the number and ages of officers and men who are unmarried, married, and widowed

Hi Barbara

In the late 1860s the infantry musters started to include details of the married establishment, giving wife's name plus ages of any children. These were families accepted by the regiment and who were allowed to travel with their husbands overseas.

Before that you have to rely on the few entries in the Regimental BMDs and using the musters to find out where he was and then checking the nearby churches.

My GGF served with the 25th so if you post his name, number, age I may have information on him.
