Can anyone help me?

I am looking for the birth certificate of Stanley Borland born 11 November 1900. Simple you may say but not so. Stanley was born out of wedlock to Isabella Borland. I have found his marriage and death certificate but no birth details. I have looked on the 1837 website and Scotlands people website(his grandparents came from Scotland), I have looked on the 1901 census for England and Scotland but no Stanley Borland.

Does anyone have any ideas?

Where was Isabella living at the time of the 1901 Cenus and who was she living with ??

Have you tried to look for a baptism for Stanley.

Do you have any idea who Stanleys father could be ?

On the 1901 census Isabella is shown as living with her mother also Isabella at Willow Grove in Formby Lancashire.

I have no idea who his father is. I am told his birth certificate did have B****** on it.

On his marriage certificate he has put his father as William Borland but this was his ggrandfather.

How would I go about finding a baptism?

Hello Pat,

What you have found on his marriage certificate is quite common!! ( I have one of mine doing the same thing)

Did the Borland family stay around the Formby area during the late 1800's 

If so it may be worth looking at the local churches for a baptism.  These are very worth a look as sometimes they give away some very interesting information.

I did go to the area earlier on in the year & the vicar said if I dropped him a line he would look to see if there was anything in the records for Borland but I never got a reply. Maybe it's time I sent him a follow up.

Hello Pat,

I had a look at the 1901 Census looking at all male Borlands of any age in England. I did not find a match for Stanley but I found only 1 male living in Formby at the time of the Census :

John Borland  30 Scotland Lancashire Formby Joiner


It is worth making contact with the Vicar, especially as he has offered to check for you. Who knows you letter might have been lost in the post.

John is Stanleys uncle. I have found the houses the families lived in in Formby. I will try & contact the vicar again.

Stanley seems to have borne his mother's surname, as many illegitimate children do, but the fact that you can't find his birth entry under that name suggests to me that he was given a different name at birth - maybe Isabella gave him his father's surname.  She may have done this in innocence, not realising that she wasn't supposed to.

I spent 20 years looking for my great great grandfather Charles Winchester Giesen, only to find that his name at birth was Charles Winchester Green Culling.   It's odd that Stanley isn't with Isabella in the 1901 census.  Have you looked at the neighbours' households or any relatives, who perhaps lived at some distance?  Perhaps he was sent away to stay with family to avoid letting the neighbours know what had happened.

How did you manage to find your great great grandfather if he was under a different name?

I have no idea who the father may have been. One story is that Isabella was in service for one of the prominent families in Liverpool and the son of the household got her pregnant? Another story is that there was an army base in the Formby area around the late 1890's and it was one of the soldiers who got her pregnant?

Isabella's parents both came from Scotland and I have checked the records but still came up with nothing

I will have to keep on searching.
