American Census
« on: Friday 22 July 05 21:25 BST (UK) »
Are there such things as Amercian Census like the British ones?

Would there be an 1861 and 1871 American census for Memphis Tennessee (no Graceland I am not researching Elvis's ancestors).

I am looking for a James Holt born abt 1856 Memphis.  His Father's name was James Holt as well, Mother unknown but might be Lillian.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

There only appears to be one family of Holts on the 1860, don't think they are yours, father W B Holt age 49 and mother Mary J, James is 5 years old, but with a bunch of siblings aged between 22 and 1.

In the 1870 there is a different family but with mother Mary Jane 33, Jas A is 16 works on a farm and younger siblings.

I don't think these are yours, but if you would like the scans please send me a pm with your email address.

Gosh, thank you very much Mary.

That was quick.  I wasn't even sure America had census.

Are both these families in Memphis?

Kind regards

Is the James Sr. from England or are we looking for a US born citizen?  Is there any more information you can give on this family?  Occupation?   Memphis is located in the sw corner of Tennessee and is in Shelby county.  It is bordered by both Arkansas and Mississippi.  It is possible that your Holts were residents in these bordering states.
