William Peter Davidson married Grace McDonald
« on: Wednesday 17 August 16 02:00 BST (UK) »
Good affternoon from new Zealand

i wonder if someone can help me please.  I'm looking for the birth of John Davidson (about 1884). His parents were William Peter Davidson and Grace (nee McDonald).  I would also like some info about William and Grace if anyone can help please.

John (known as Jock) came to New Zealand where he married in 1915 and had a family. On the announcement of his marriage it says he is the eldest son of the late William and Grace Davidson of Dundee.  I also know (from Jock's marriage certificate) that William was an engineer.

Any help would be much appreciated and I am very happy to reciprocate with help on New Zealand records.

Many thanks

Hi Deb,

Have you tired www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk which is a pay-per-view site but very reasonably priced.

Have you found the family on 1891 & further census' which would help for John's actual place of birth.

His parent's marriage place, date & mother's maiden name will be on it (assuming they were married).

Marriage 1880 for William Davidson (middle initial "P" not included) & Grace MacDonald in Angus, Scotland on SP.

I didn't search for an area but it was not in Dundee although in the County of Angus which is a fairly large County which includes Dundee & surrounding areas.

There is nowhere else you can obtain the marriage.

Annie

Added, Cert. will also state where each were living, William's occupation, both father's occupations & whether deceased, mother's maiden names & whether deceased & witnesses for the total cost of £1.38 (BP) & downloadable there & then.

Credits cost £7.00 BP (in batches of 30 credits) & the marriage would be 6 credits. 1 credit for the index & 5 credits for the cert.

Edit, Just realised William was already deceased in 1915  ::)

Possibly related though?

That 1880 marriage was in St Mary which is now part of Dundee.
Grace Ann M(a)cDonald is the bride.

Looking at the 1891 Census index there is a William Davidson(born c1850 Dundee) and Grace Ann Davidson(born c1855 Strathtay Perthshire) with son John Davidson(born c1884 Dundee) all living Dundee.

Quote from: ev
That 1880 marriage was in St Mary which is now part of Dundee.

St Mary was always part of Dundee, along with St Clement, St Mary and St Peter.

You would think, wouldn't you, that if you search in 'Dundee', you would get results from all the Registration Districts that make up Dundee (and similarly with other cities where there are several RDs, like Aberdeen, Edinburgh and Glasgow)? You would be wrong.

If you restrict your search to 'Dundee' you only get results from RDs whose official names include the name of the city:
Dundee Burgh, 1st district 1855-1855 (District Number 282/1)
Dundee East and West 1967-1976 (282 then 350)
Dundee 1977 to date (350)
Dundee Landward, 1st District 1855-1855 (282/1)
Dundee 1st, 2nd and 3rd (or Lochee) 1855-1867 (282/1, 282/2 and 282/3)
Dundee East 1952-1966 (282/1)
Dundee West 1952-1966 (282/2)

Just for the record, the differently named RDs in the city were as follows
St Andrew 1868-1951 (282/4 then 282/3)
St Clement 1868-1951 (282/3 then 282/2)
St Mary 1868-1918 (282/2)
St Peter 1868-1918 (282/1)
St Mary and St Peter (combined) 1919-1951 (282/1)
Lochee 1868-1976 (282/5, then 282/4, then 282/3, then 355)
Never trust anything you find online (especially submitted trees and transcriptions on Ancestry, MyHeritage, FindMyPast and other commercial web sites) unless it's an image of an original document - and even then be wary because errors can and do occur.
