Russia/Ukraine place names help
« on: Thursday 18 August 16 15:46 BST (UK) »
Hey everyone! Hope your week is going smoothly ;D

I'm researching my brother's family. Specifically Leib Cherwinsky. He left Hamburg August 9, 1913 and arrived August 20, 1913 in NY. I know everything about him in America, but having trouble placing him in Russia/Ukraine. Most of his documents state he was born in Nikolaev which i assumed was Mykolaiv. Today i realized there was more than one Nikolaev in the Ukraine. So i'm posting the pictures of various documents that list alternative birth locations with the hope that someone can either decipher the writing or recognize the area itself. Ive also included his brother Morris's records for reference. Additional information: Their father's name was Abraham Judah. Thanks!

Edited to add: The second picture lists Dubry, but i have no idea where that is.

Hello,

Image leib3.jpg identifies the province (gubernia) as Khersonsky, i.e. Kherson. So Leib hailed from Mykolayiv, Ukraine (46°58' N, 32°00' E), which is 32 miles SW of Dobre.

However, I did not believe your image leib2.jpg shows Leib or any relatives; I can't quite make out the father's name on the far right, but it does not say Abraham or Judah.

How do you know Leib's father's name? Did he have a sister named Chaje?

Justin

Thank you so much for answering! Leib2 is from his arrival in NY. They listed him as Leibal. I couldnt make out the fathers name either. His fathers name comes from the jewish cemetery so Abraham Judah could be his jewish name, not his russian/ukranian name or given name at all. I know its the correct passengers list because i have his naturalization papers. Yes he had a sister Chaje. Thank you again!

Hi
I have gone back to your post and searched again.
I picked up the passenger list that you part copied.
So, on viewing the first record before you get to see the document, it says where she was born, Birth location other = bielakew

I have searched for this place and with the changes from over the years it appears to be Bromberg Poland.
Bielawki - Prussia (1840 -1855) (see town Bydgoszcz)
Bydgoszcz (Bromberg) - Prussia (1840 -1855)
(includes towns: Bocianowo, Bartodzieje, Bielawki, Bocianowo, Jaksice, Prady)
I think the difference between bielakew and Bielawki was a "lost in translation"
This link below will give the place names and the years they were used.

Bielawki is south east of Hamburg.
