help needed connecting vcr/dvd player to tv
« on: Thursday 18 August 16 21:34 BST (UK) »
Hi

I recently toyed with the idea of changing my old videos to dvd's and was tempted to buy a kit to do it.  Instead I bought a vhs/dvd combination unit ( second hand ) thinking this might be the easiest option, but now I'm not so sure....   I had to download the manual from the internet, but I am so confused with what leads it needs, as the unit only came with remote control and power lead.  I also have a youview box where the tv aerial is plugged into.  I don't want to record anything on the video, just literally, transfer video to dvd.
Please could somebody explain in the simplest terms what else I need.  The vcr unit has an hdmi slot, and is a Panasonic, if that's any help.
Simple explanations only please :D

Many thanks

You need  a connecting lead   long enough   to reach between your two units.

How old is your TV   screen?    Is it  a relatively new flat screen?

Depending on the age  of each piece  of equipment,   you may  need  21 pin Scart  connectors.

TV is about five years old and a flat screen.  Not sure about the age of the vhs/dvd unit, seems to be in good condition.

I have a scart lead which has two ends, if that makes any sense!

Are you saying that it is one unit for transferring tapes to DVDs? If so, it probably works independently. We had one at school when I was teaching and all we did was put the tape in, put the blank dvd in and press record. It wasn't connected up to anything else. From what I remember it was quite slow i.e, if you were transferring a film that lasted 90 minutes, thats how long it took to record. You only need to connect it to a tv if you want to watch it.

Thanks groom, yes it is one unit for both. I thought i might need on screen instructions to record a disc?

What output ports are on the back of the vhs/dvd unit?

And what input ports are available on the TV?

I would try the following, in this order:

1. HDMI
2. Scart
3. RGB

You need the same type of port on both the vhs/dvd and the tv.

It has hdmi and scart on both tv and video.
Not sure what RGB is though?

RGB are the separate phono-jack leads, usually coloured red, white or yellow.

Don't worry about them, just go for HDMI if you have such a lead, or Scart if you haven't.
(HDMI leads can be expensive!)
