BARNETT 1851 Census Chatham
« on: Saturday 23 July 05 02:47 BST (UK) »
Would someone please look up my BARNETT family in Chatham in the 1851 census?

In the 1861 census, they were living at 245 High Street in Chatham and another Barnett, possibly a son, was living at 148 High Street.

The family might have looked like this in 1851:

Barnett or Benjamin or Barney or Barnaby BARNETT, born about 1795, Chatham
Hannah Barnett, wife, born about 1801, Chatham
Benjamin Barnett, son, born about 1834, Chatham
Hannah Barnett, daughter, born about 1836, Chatham
Rose Barnett, daughter, born ? (her 1856 marriage record lists her residence as 245 High Street)
Amelia Barnett, daughter, born about 1839-40
Lee Barnett, daughter, born about 1843, Chatham
Rebecca Barnett, daughter, born about 1848, Chatham

Thank you for any help!

Regards,
Josephine

Thank you very much for your help, Carol!

This is very interesting.  I had assumed, based on the 1861 census transcription, that Hannah was Amelia's mother, but I guess not!  (Amelia is my ancestor.)  I recently found a possible birth registration for Amelia (in 1840) on Free BMD, so hopefully I will be able to order that someday.

Would it be asking too much to ask if you would be so kind as to look them up in the 1841 census, assuming that they might have been on High Street back then?

I've been searching, page by page, through a lot of the Medway Ancestors records online for Chatham and Gillingham but there's a lot that I haven't been able to find and it's often impossible to tell who belongs to which family...

Thanks again for your help!

Regards,
Josephine

Hi Josephine,
Having another trawl through Chatham 1841 and came across your family:
ref HO107 487-04 folio 22 page 9: High Street, Chatham
Barnett Barnett age 43 slopseller
Hannah do age 40
Esther do age 15
Rosa do age 12
Benjamin do age 7
Abraham do age 3
Hannah do age 5
Amelia do age 1
all born in county except Hannah
(A slopseller was a seller of ready made clothes, we have them in my husbands line in Gravesend)

Thanks so much, Carol!

I've never heard of a slopseller before, LOL!

By ready made clothes, do you mean made by a manufacturer, as opposed to tailor-made for an individual?

Thanks again!

Hi Josephine,
I think the dictionary definition is:
'a dealer in cheap ready-made clothing', so clothing made by a manufacturer rather than a tailor. Seems to be a few of these along the north Kent coast - Chatham, Strood, Gravesend, Dover. Maybe catered for the seafaring element. Our slopsellers were quite wealthy, so there must have been money in it, even in the 1820's.

Just a quick note while a figure out how to use this site.
I was looking up possible origins of Jewish Barnetts and I came across your posts on here.
I guess the GEDCOM stuff I got via my father from Joanne in Toronto is the same info that you have researched.

My lineage:
Barney Barnett
Benjamin Barnett
Jos. Barnett
Albert Joseph Barnett
Constance Kathleen Hall
(my dad)

I guess we're fairly closely related.
cheers,

tim
