Brett and Garnham
« on: Sunday 21 August 16 18:38 BST (UK) »
I have come to a brickwall with a marriage on my family tree and would appreciate any help with this. I have a Phillip Brett born in 1767 in Earl Stonham who appears linked twice on my family tree. His mother and father are listed as Thomas Brett and Mary Garnham, but I am unsure how to research them further. I believe Mary Garnham maybe the daughter of Thomas and Jane from an ancestry hint, but I have no idea if this is correct or where they were married.

Any ideas how I can track these two families back further?

Hi Calvin,
I think the majority of parish registers prior to 1754 have not been transcribed  yet (or may be in the process) by the Suffolk FHS.

I started to look at Philip Brett's entries to see if any info came to light but nothing was revealed.

You may already have the following  details;

5-4-1790 Phillip Brett - m - Hamon [sic] Earl Stonham

28-4-1796 Haman Brett (w/o Philip) buried Earl Stonham

23-5-1797 Phillip Brett (wdr) - m - Audrey Palmer Earl Stonham.

21-3-1796 Thomas Brett (78) Labr Earl Stonham St.Mary
8-5-1796   Mary         "   (71) (wid)  "        "             "

If these ages at burials are correct, will give a possible year of birth etc.

The Suffolk FHS do offer search services and to go back further you may like to visit their site at;

Thomas Bret married Mary Garnham 1748 Earl Stonham (per Boyds Index when only year is given).

An online tree has the full date as 25/10/1748.

Thomas' age at death suggests a ca. birthdate of 1718.   Can only find one Thomas Brett baptism between 1713 and 1723 and that's a Thomas bp.27/1/1717 Stoke by Nayland, son of Samual and Elizabeth.

I have many Garnhams in my tree (my mother's maiden name) and I have traced the family back to the early 1500s in Gosbeck.  They stayed there until the 1700s when they seemed to migrate to Belstead, near Ipswich.  As Earl Stonham isn't particularly distant from Gosbeck, I will check my records and see if I can find any connections.

Kind regards

Mary Garnham d/o Thomas and Jane Garnham baptised 25th July 1725 at Earl Stonham.
Some siblings:
Thomas 4 Feb 1715
William 9 Aug 1719
Benjamin 18 Feb 1721

I couldn't see the marriage of Thomas and Jane at Earl Stonham.

One which may or may not be of interest:
Fynne Garnham of Gosbeck and Mary Vverstall m. 29th October 1678 at Earl Stonham

Hi All

I've recently got back into my ancestry and started from scratch as my offline tree got corrupted.
I've been going back on some of my old posts and chats and have come back to the BRETT family in Earl Stonham.
I thought that the BRETT family interwove into my family twice, but it looks as though it was more than that.
When i've looked back at my data I'm confused about an ancestor of mine: Susan BRETT.
Susan married Edward YOUNG in 1837 in Ipswich where she lists Philip BRETT as her father on her marriage certificate.
On the 1851 and 1861 census her birth place is listed as Stonham.
I can find a baptism for her in Earl Stonham in 1817 daughter of Philip and Ann BRETT
This is where I get confused.
I cannot locate a marriage between a Philip BRETT and Ann.
A Phillip BRETT later marries Susan WILLIAMS in 1819 and they go on to have more children, however I can also not locate a death for Ann BRETT between 1817 and 1819
Is it possible that Ann is mis-transcribed?
Several ancestry hints list Susan BRETT as Susan Gowing BRETT, but I do not know where this information comes from - is it a possible maiden name for Ann?
Any help would be gratefully received as I have no idea how I can unravel this further
