John Greest b.1884 Petworth

Is there anyone here researching the Greest family. I looked on surname interest board-nothing there. His father b. 1848 was a blacksmith from Hambledon, grandfather b. 1805 was a Master Blacksmith also from Hambledon. John was a carpenter.

John married my Grandfather's sister May Redman 1915.

I need help with details of his death if at all possible.

Thank you yes that is him. I have just posted on the look_up board. He was found dead on Southsea beach. I feel sure it would be in a newspaper. I had no luck online. It was suggested I try a library but at present am unable to go to a Hampshire library. Can just about manage my local library.

You could try the British Newspaper Archive to see if they have any papers from that period.

As he was found dead on Southsea Beach I would think there was an inquest of some sort, might be worth trying to track down the report from that - Hampshire Record Office to see if they can help on the newspaper front and inquest report etc.

Thanks, I tried that but found it hard to navigate. They have Portsmouth evening news but it's hard to pin down a year. Just gives date range 1950-1999. Tried searching by name and county but thousands of entries was taking far too long.

John did come from Wembly and in probate said he had been missing for a day. It could be in another paper I suppose. Have tried everything I can think of in google search engine-big fat zero. 

It is my task for today. I will definitely try Hants record office.

I have just picked up your post whilst searching on line. I am descendant of Richard Greest (b.1805), a blacksmith from Pitt Hill near Hambledon. He had a son John Greest b.1858 who I presume is the father of your John Greest b 1884 Petworth.

A relative (now deceased) carried out this research and found that the Greest's originated from Lurgashall, near to Petworth. The earliest ancestor I have recorded is a Thomas Greest, b. Lurgashall in 1585.

Hi goofus,

Yes the same family but. the father of my John is William b. 1848, Hambledon a blacksmith and wife Emily.   William is the son of Richard b.1805 Master Blacksmith, Hambledon.

There is a anc tree (x 3) for John  Greest 3 May 1884 - Petworth, Sussex, England
died 2 September 1962 - Southsea, Hampshire. Lots of info on it. Have you had a look ?
