Where is Callesson?
« on: Thursday 01 September 16 14:36 BST (UK) »
Reference in the year 1775 to a place named Callesson. Book is entitled "Burgess and Guild Brethren of Glasgow...". Subject entered the Guild "by purchase" and was noted as a "gardener in Callesson". Any help trying to locate Callesson is appreciated.

This is an 1874 newspaper advert.
Perhaps one hundred years before, there was an estate or big hoose.

Lawrie name in Fife (and elsewhere) with all its various spellings.

That must be it! I can't find any place name even close to this in Glasgow or Lanarkshire. Apparently if one bought into a guild (by purchase) they were not connected to a Guild family and were, therefore, strangers. Coilessan in Ayrshire fits with the listing.  Thanks to you both.

Living 3000 miles away I should have done better with my Scottish geography. Thanks for the correction, buckhyne. Argyll it is.
