My other great-grandfather
« on: Sunday 04 September 16 20:39 BST (UK) »
My other great-grandfather was George Langford of Burton upon Trent who was born approx 1893. I cannot locate him on the 1911 census but as he was between 21 and 25 during the period of the first world war I can only assume that he may have been conscripted and served during that period but am having difficulty finding him. Another great-grandfather Alfred Alexander Stone was born in 1884 and would also have been the correct age to serve during the first world war but again I have not been able to find anything of either of these people. Any help would be fantastic.

There is a birth registration for George Langford on FreeBMD. Registration district Burton, June 1/4 1893 vol 6b page 447.
He is with parents John and Sarah Ann and siblings in 1901.

Thanks. That might well be him. The dates sound right as does the place.

Hi Adam
Be aware that over 60% of WW1 service records were destroyed in WW11 and those that survived are  known as the burnt documents. Therefore it is more than likely that you will not find a record for these two men.
What do survive are the Medal Roll Index Cards and the Service Medal and  Award Rolls. Unfortunately these do not give any personal details so it is very difficult to identify specific people. Very rarely there may be some personal information on the back of the Index cards such as an address.
I took a look and there are only two G Langfords on the Medal Roll Index cards on ancestry - that is without any middle initials or with G as a middle initial. There are none with the name George showing. However there are 4 G Langfords showing in the Service Medal and  Award Rolls but none with the specific first name George.

There are 3 Medal Roll Index cards for an Alfred A Stone but nothing to identify anyone of them as your man. And there are 17 results for A Stone
The Medal Roll Index cards are free to search on ancestry.

You need to find them on the 1918 Electoral Rolls for the area they were living at the time. That's assuming they were still serving in 1918.
This will give rank, service no. & Regt.
You can also look for births 1914-18 which might indicate when they were home.
In addition Pension records exist which usually included a short service record, assuming again they received one.
